I really want to purchase this Head Unit but I cannot seem to find anyone who has been able to make it fit with a stock dash kit. Metra or Scosche. It's a 7" double DIN and has a motorized rotating screen that reveals the CD/DVD player so the bottom internal face of the dash kit gets in the way of the rotation. Has anybody moded a dash kit to work with this or similar featured unit?

Wow really? with that exact same head unit the Scosche fit? Crutchfield stated that they wouldn't fit. Can you post a picture of your install?

I have one in my 13. Should not be much difference in the mounting kit. Purchased system, harness and dash kit from Crutchfield. Took some work to get it where the bottom would not pinch. Not sure which dash kit, but you install the deck, then the dash kit goes right over the top, IE: deck does not mount to dash kit. You have to mount deck, install dash kit, then figure out how the deck needs to be adjusted with the 4 bolts (up, down, left, right). What I did not like about the mount kit is that the brackets that mount deck to dash are plastic, and not very solid.

It's encouraging to hear you've made it work despite Crutchfield saying it's not possible as is. Which they do for the 2010 model. I'm really curious to hear if anyone has done so with a '05-'08 model since starting in '09 Scosche lists a different dash kit. I'm assuming these differences in dash kits would change the way the double din fits.

I had a slight problem on mine. I ended up filing down a bit of the plastic on the trim ring, as that was what was catching.

was what you filed down noticeable or is it hidden by the head unit?

It will pass everything but the 1 foot test. IOW, if you look close, you can see it, but it's not readily apparent. It was probably around 1/32 - 1/16 deep and about 1/8 wide. Very close to clearing but just not quite. It would catch just enough to stop it.

Funny, I'm looking into the exact same thing right now. I got the same explanation from Crutchfield: that the faceplate needs to move (I though it needed to slide down) in order to load CDs/DVDs, and that the mounting kits for the Tacoma do not allow that to happen. Great to see that there seem to be solutions.

Thanks, that would be great. As far as I've seen in other threads the Scosche mounting kit seems to get the most votes. Unfortunately I don't have any links to share. But I'll be going with the Scosche.

I got most of the bits together - bought through Crutchfield, as they had some good deals, which got the price close enough to other sellers.

A few issues popped up as I continued to research:
    - the stock Toyota microphone can apparently not be used - it runs to the Bluetooth module and can't be plugged in to the new HU. Crutchfield tech suggested mounting the microphone that came with the HU at the top of the driver A-piller.
    - I wanted to keep an Aux input and add a USB port and found directions for an aftermarket part here:

Here's the link for eBay part: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...ermarket-head-unit.103041/page-4#post-9134309

I won't get to the install for a bit, but will post an update when I get started.

i guess you're referring to the Toyota stock microphone... luckily for me i wont have that problem haha. Mine doesn't have any of the fancy gadgets, no Bluetooth either. yet ;) and yes that's the exact same USB port i purchased. however i was thinking about installing it on the front of the center console box or inside of it. Still not sure if i want to cut into the box.

Most likely i'll be taking this HU out whenever i get a newer Tacoma (#TacoForLife) and putting it in there so i want to be able to reinstall the OEM HU and not have any noticeable mods remain... like a unusable USB port in the console.

Yes, exactly. I have edited my previous post to better explain that.

I got the wiring harness built, the stock HU removed and am fiddling with some additional wiring ideas, as well as trying to figure out the Scoshe face and mounting brackets. I had hoped to be able to use the stock (metal) brackets, but they put the HU too far out of the mounting hole (from what I can tell) and won't allow enough room to get the face back into place.

I am also trying to figure out how to use the additional USB port on the HU; I'll try to run a USB cable up towards the windshield - looks like I can sneak it up through the windshield vent), so I can power my GPS unit from that cable rather than having a cable dangling down in front of the HU to the factory 12V outlet.

AC-Johnson: did you get your HU installed, and is the Eject working with the Scoshe bracket?

yes i got mine installed. everything works great except the thin rectangle black piece that goes around the HU. it fits around it just fine but it seems like the scoshe unit squeezes it too tight on the bottom and causes the bottom to warp up in the middle and not fit flush. nothing interferes with the movement of the screen i just dont like the look. trying to think of a solution. did this happen to you?

Also i ran my second USB to the glove box.

Yep, I had the exact same issue. The long sides of the rectangle bows towards the front of the vehicle. It does't look too bad though. I thought about trying to "shim" the black frame out with toothpicks and then add a dap of silicone in the center to hold it in place - I'd remove the toothpicks after the silicone dried. But with all the other "fun" I ran into during the install, I decided to skip it for now. I guess it would be possible to pry the black frame out and glue a bit of "shim" material (double-stick foam ...?) to the back of it and simply reinstall.

But like you, the Eject works perfectly with no need for adjusting or trimming. Odd that it is mentioned as an issue.

My truck has JBL, which adds an additional Axxess box behind the HU plus additional wire bundles, so it took a lot of fiddling to get the HU into place for final install. It was a very snug fit and required all wiring to be positioned "just so" for it to work.

It also took me awhile to run the microphone cable and the wiring for the backup camera. Of course, when I installed the second HU (see below) the Reverse Gear signal wire had worked itself loose at the origin, which meant I had to pull the HU to test voltages all the way back before I found the issue.

When the first HU was finally installed, the HU locked up on me, so Crutchfield had to send me a new one as replacement - tech said there was a new known issue with the backup camera settings.

I ran my second USB forward up through the windshield vent to power my Garmin GPS. I velcroed the female USB to the top of the dash and run a short 12" USB cable to power the GPS. Works very nicely.

All in all I'm very happy with the HU, the sound and the HU features. I get a bit of high-pitched whine when I play music through Bluetooth, but I mostly plug the iPhone in and play via CarPlay anyway. I may try to troubleshoot at some point, but for now I'm happy.
