    Hi all
My compressor recently grenaded. How can I obtain a step by step process for replacing it myself?
    Manual?
    Thanks! JD

Same thing happened to me on my 4Runner. Autozone had the Magnetic Clutch relay in stock here locally.

So tonight I replaced my cabin air filter. Ac ran great for 5 min or so then binking light warm air. Turned it off then on again got a squeal. What's the odds its the relay vs. Clutch or compressor?

From what I've gathered if your compressor seized you've got other components like the evaporator etc to flush and possibly replace if metal has gotten thru the system. It's recommended that you let a pro pull a vacuum on the system and recharge it to prevent moisture from getting into the system.

I don't know what brand it was, but I used a cheap kit off ebay. I replaced the compressor and condensor, put the right amount of pag oil in and went to an AC shop to get it charged. I didn't change the drier because it's a bitch to get to. Four years later it still works great. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-A-C-COM...2005|Model:Tacoma&hash=item418c35536a&vxp=mtr

Thinking my compressor went. Any input appreciated. Drove 15 miles and AC worked fine. Parked it for half hour. Came out and wife insisted that she start it up and turn AC on while I loaded her flowers. Smelled an awful odor inside and out like wires burning mixed with dirty socks with burning rubber as the truck let out some squealing underneath. Sound stopped when she turned AC off. I got in and turned it back on. Blinking AC light and no cold air. I pulled the relay. Tapped it and reinserted. Same blinking AC light. Looked at cabin air filter. Guess what...none there. Should I even waste the money on a relay?

Compressor has seized. Blinking light means that the rotation sensor is not seeing the compressor pulley move.

It may be the clutch if you're lucky. If you look at it, you'll see a rubber ring that connects the inside hub to the outside ring of the clutch. It's what allows the clutch to flex and squeeze together when the electromagnet is engaged. When they fail, the rubber lets go of one of the two and squeals like a stuck pig when you try to turn it on.

I was able to fix mine in 30 minutes by swapping the clutch plate from a junkyard compressor. May be worth a look before you buy stuff.

If it's the belt squealing and smoking though, the compressor definitely seized up.

Could this be related to my frame swap less than 500 miles ago? Put the gauges on the AC system the other day. It had a lot of oil in it. If it's something the dealer screwed up then they can fix it. Odd that I've had the truck for 10 years and barely drive it in summer. No issues for 94k. Then it gets a frame swap and the AC dies.

Check out rockauto. I bought the gdp compressor. They have(had) a combo deal too.
Buy a new condenser and expansion valve.
Linesets are optional, I replaced mine but the high side line is not available new. I reused it.
Buy new hardware from a Toyota dealer, like the bolts.
Compressor comes out easier if you take the alternator out first.
You don't need to drain the radiator and remove it to pull the condenser. It's a pain, but doable.
While you're doing this, it's a good time to replace all the idlers if they're squealing.

in another thread i saw it said that the expansion valve AND the filter: "The expansion valve can be accessed through the hole in the firewall on the passenger side after you disconnect the lines and remove the rubber grommet. You need a E10 Torx nut driver to get it out."

    has anybody done this recently?

that is a small grommet that is just slightly bigger than the valve itself. i assume it immediately on the other side of the grommet....

    anybody?

Behind that rubber seal is the expansion valve. You have to release both of those black couplings on the lines, book says to use 2 small flat head screwdrivers. Pry down on both at the same time then it will release.
