In Oregon they use sand or in central/eastern Oregon fine volcanic gravel because it is easy to get. After the road clears, they come through with a street sweeper and re-collect in some areas. Never had rust issues on the west coast. Now I am in the South and no rust here either. I can't imagine why they don't come up with a better way to deal with it up north. Probably some salt contract the mafia has who's family owns a chain of rust prevention shops.

Colorado used to use cinder on the roads but they had to stop because the fine dust that gets created would sit in the air and create a really thick brown cloud in the valleys. We still have it due to the natural dust, car exhaust and other sources but it's not nearly as bad as 20 and 30 years ago. So they use a liquid magnesium chloride deicer now in town that doesn't create the particulate cloud and in the mountains they use different things, mag-chloride liquid, crystals or it mixed with aggregates like sand (one of the products they use is called Ice Slicers, for example).

Yes my parents bought me my truck, but I don't try to rub it in or anything. Anytime I say that on here so many people get mad but heck. I am very proud to have my truck and I want my parents to have the credit. I don't know why people get so mad over that

It's probably just jealousy. My parents couldn't afford to buy me a car, but I've always been glad for others who could. Just be grateful for parents who can and will buy you a new truck! Don't worry about what others think, just enjoy your sweet ride!!!

Seriously, don't take it personally. Everyone's situation is different. Your parents bought you a nice truck that you obviously appreciate and are passionate about.

People would shit themselves on here if they saw what parents bought their kids in the neighborhood I live in. You look in the high school parking lot and see kids with brand new BMW's, Mercedes, Porsche's, etc.

Some families have a ton of money and buying nice cars for every member of the family is no big deal to them. It all depends how the kid acts. If they are responsible, are aware that they are fortunate and have a great work ethic then so what.

People give you a hard time because some people work really really hard for many many many years to finally afford their Tacoma. So yes, it probably is just a little resentment. I don't personally care and I don't think others should as well. You're a Tacoma owner just like the rest of us.

Oh those Mazda 3's disintegrated up here, all of them are toast. Apparently Mazda would fix all the rust (no idea how) under warranty but they were pretty quiet about it.

Not sure about everyone else but when I buy a new vehicle. The first thing I do is have the
vehicle undercoated and rust proofed. Why pay for a new vehicle and not protect it from rust? Never had any problems with rust under my vehicles after they have been treated. Any reasons not to undercoat and rust proof?

2 feet of 5/8 ID hose and a worm clamp is all you need. Route it through the frame and the AC will drain on the ground without touching your truck. The AC drain sits on the passenger side firewall.

You should create a new thread with Uptown2k's frame rust photo and your preventable fix for it so the admins can try to sticky it. That rust spot has the potential to be something fierce in a few years unless something preventable like your fix can help.

This is what I followed. I used blue silicon hose but any good heater hose will work.

Yes, very easy to do. I did this as soon as I found out about this potential problem (on this forum of course!) and after seeing the rust already forming on a new truck, I am really glad I did this mod!

Luckily I live in AZ so rust is almost a nonfactor here. If I lived in an area where it snowed regularly I would understand the concerns here.

Yep, west of the Missouri River is the place to buy a used vehicle, even then it's a good practice to crawl underneath before buying.

By the way, the '03 - '09 4Runners have some severe frame and undercarriage rusting issues also in the Rust Belt. Same as the Tundra and Tacoma. 1st Gen Tundras also have the frame replacement program, that's a LOT of frame replacements between the Tundra and Tacoma.

Even this '07 Runner I just bought one-owner Denver truck 101k miles is missing most of the paint on the rear suspension, surface rust, but nothing like Easterners have on same year 4Runners. Those guys try to replace sway bars, drop the spare, drop the skid plate and they're snapping bolts, the spare won't drop, front crossmember completely rotted, holes in the frame, fuel tank straps rotted out, etc.

I think the problem in humid areas is the frame never dries out in winter. Here in Colorado you get a winter storm, CDOT sands, salts, uses MagChloride, but then for the next week humidity drops to 15% and completely dries out every bit of moisture on the frame.

If water gets into even the tiniest crack when it freezes the water expands. So in a humid area, all winter long, you get the freeze/thaw cycle. The water gets into cracks, freezes and expands the crack, then there's a thaw but the moisture is still there so when it freezes again, yep that little crack just keeps getting worse.

That's my theory. I've lived in Colorado my whole life and they sand/salt the living daylights on the roads. We do have pretty severe winters, you know. CDOT doesn't have some magical salt that doesn't corrode metal, it's just the fact that the frame dries out fast in low humidity.
