Can you share a video of the noise? I'm curious to hear what it's like and to know what to look out for.

Drove with the senior tech. Took less than a 10 minute drive. He said without a doubt something is wrong with the rear diff. He said no way any differential should ever sound like that.

They said they need to call Toyota though before doing anything because the mileage is so low.

Will keep updates going....this dealership experience so far has been way better than my last one.

Mine just started... Canadian 16' TRDOR AC 6MT, 2500kms (1550miles). Pretty quiet now but still noticeable. When at first I didn't have this I thought I was good but kicked in on my drive home from the cabin on Sunday :(

I used to hear the speed at 35 mph or so added the plugs and that went away. Have heard on very rare occasion a slight howl at 55 plus mph. It could be the wind maybe maybe not.

It was windy but it was specifically at 90~100km/h (55-62mph) especially when lightly feathering the throttle. Sounds just like the video that was posted a few pages back. I'll get her up to speed tonight and check again.

Yeah I had a toyota tech tell me on my 2011 that the sound i was hearing was power steering pump. Put in a new power steering pump and rack and pinion and the sound was still there. It wound up being a 60 dollar pulley was all that was wrong.

The tech was obviously familiar with differentials. But in fact it was kind of weird, the service manager asked me "so where do you hear it? 50's? 65?" I thought that guess was way too much of a coincidence, since my previous differential howling issue had different speed ranges. Maybe he is in this thread :spy:

The tech asked me a couple questions just to confirm what he was looking for before we went on the drive. I asked him if he had seen any others of these new ones here with this issue and he said no. However he did see one come in that had leaked it's oil everywhere due to a manufacturing issue with loose bolts on the 3rd member. So I assured him mine had never leaked.

Yes, positive. I can turn the sound on and off with applying and removing the throttle. Sound starts at 55, changes pitch all the way up beyond that. Classic differential issue.

I think I heard the rear end howl for the first time today:annoyed:...I was in the 55mph range...I think I might skip the dealership trips (minus regular maintenance) for the all the issues these trucks are having and just trade this thing next year. I've been a huge Toyota fanboy...buttt I'm not in love with this gen.

    Quick update:

Dealer called toyota, toyota wanted them to test drive a new model with the exact same configuration. They told them that isn't possible because of the manual transmission. So they drove a new OR auto and said it was silent.

The dealership has determined it is not normal. I need to take it back in 2 days for the shop foreman to drive it (he wasn't in today) while they work with Toyota to determine the path forward.
