I plan on replacing the fuel filter in my 2003 2.4L next week. If anyone has the factory service manual for 2003 or 2004 Tacomas, could you see if I'm supposed to remove the pressure from the fuel line before disconnecting it from the filter? And if so, exactly how do I accomplish that? My Ford AeroStar requires pulling a connector so the fuel doesn't squirt out under pressure. Just wondering if my Tacoma also requires it.

Just pull the gas cap off or loosen it while you are working. Yes, some gas will spill/squirt out, but it will stop eventually.

Thanks for the replies and advice.

I've checked out the relocation procedures. I probably won't do it because I've had the truck 13 years now and this will be the first time I've replaced the filter. If I were going to replace it on an annual basis, relocating it would definitely make sense. But for a once in a decade job...no.

Just changed the fuel filter on my 3.4l....Right above the gas tank there was a rubber line that connects the tank to the hard line leading to the filter: clamped it off with a set of vice grips. When I disconnected the flare fittings, the filter drained about a 1/2 cup of fuel into a container. For future reference!
