Remote start reprogramming ?

Can a 2016 tacoma be programmed for remote start, considering all the wiring is already there. If not I want to install one that uses the original fob to do it, with my push button start..

I asked the dealer about one Saturday and he told me that Toyota hasn't released one for sale yet. He said they will probably run about $399 + installation.

 

With the remote starter, do you need to leave the factory fob tucked away inside the vehicle for the remote start to work?

 

Amazon has wayyyyy better viper systems that run $400+ in store for $160, just get it it's so much simpler and has 100x more features. Not to mention it's a shit ton more added security as well as a remote start, etc

 

I have I t installed on my 2016 TRD ORSB Auto and do not need to have Fob in truck, Mine was installed at Dealers

 

Dealer installed mine but it was after market and when you open the door after you started it it would die and you would have to restart it again. I have the keyless key fob on my 2016 TRD off-road

If your priority is to use the OEM key fob for remote start, then the EVO-ALL bypass model is a good choice. It's cheap and easy to install, and it's only one unit. The downside is limited range of the OEM key fob (~100' direct sight) and no feedback is provided to ensure start. If you do not have line of sight to your vehicle and want feedback, you'll need an additional remote start module with RF which means another fob (unless you opt for a phone driven module, which will add cost).

The ebay dealer is charging you for flashing the EVO-ALL to your vehicle and providing that makeshift T-harness. If you're so inclined you could do the same for less.

You could also buy the EVO-ONE module which does not require the flash update, but the prices for the EVO-ONE ($120 on Amazon) are similar to EVO-ALL plus the Flash Link ($100 on Amazon). Both the EVO-ONE and EVO-ALL would provide the ability to add other after market features using datalink.

A possible way to save money is to find someone with a Flash Link Updater and have them update the EVO-ALL. You might find a local alarm install shop that would do it for $20 or something. I have one, but I live in Minneapolis.

 

Got the evo-all put on Thursday night.
Super easy install, and very small unit..but it wouldn't work !
Checked everything four times and it was hooked up and had voltages and grounds, but wouldn't finish programming..
So I got ahold of their tech support. They are great and fast !
Still couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work.. so I read their diagnostic procedure and determined the can-bus connections were backwards. Switched them. And it works great. I think their wiring colors were switched in their instructions. I will verify that maybe on Monday after I get back from Chicago.

I love this new Tacoma and check out the fancy logo on the windshield, and red logo...

Got home from Chicago, looked under dash. It was my vault for switching the two wires at the obd connector. Getting too old to see such small wires I guess.

 

Does the truck stay running once you open the door after remote start?

 

It stays running for a few seconds after opening the door then shuts off..
But I have no problems with that... in reality nobody should have a problem with that.

 

Some helpful hints based on my install:

- You do not need a hood pin. By default, the remote start will not engage if the hood is open. The CAN-Bus high and low wires will communicate the hood being open using the default install options. Just make sure you do NOT set Hood Option to Off while updating the EVO-ALL using the Fortin Updater.
- I used the hood pin wire for a manual override switch which i neatly integrated into the lower dash to the right of the hood release. If the hood pin wire is grounded, that will override the remote starter. So all you need is a switch that is grounded on one side and connected to the hood pin on the other.
- The most difficult wire to get at is the ignition wire. It is right behind the Push-to-Start button. It requires you to pop out the left side of that small panel surrounding that area. That panel is flimsy so be careful.
- Turn your steering wheel to reveal two screws to release the steering column panels.
- The 12V wire is a slightly bigger gauge than all the other wires. While splicing this wire, I spliced in an additional wire for unknown future needs. May as well I guess.

 

Yes...I forgot to mention that since he programmed it for me I did not have to hook up the hood pin switch or the extra brown/white trace wire. All the wires that are not needed, he has already removed. So you have ten wires to hook up, the connectors are already on the wires.. Then follow the programming. The start button can be accessed by slightly pulling the left side of the trim where the button is. Then unhook the connection from the back of the start button, and you will have enough wire to put the connections on..

This fortin remote start is by far the easiest that I have installed.

The reason that the vehicle shuts off when you open the door, is so nobody can steal your truck. When a key type of vehicle is remote started, you get in the vehicle. Put the key in the ignition and turn it on before you touch the brake pedal. Since push to start doesn't have a key to put in, that is why it shuts off......

EVO-ALL? Any particular reasons to choose one vs the other other than cost?

I've been to Fortin's site and it's not entirely clear, especially not in context of using either on a push-to-start Tacoma.

It does seem the EVO-ONE will work with both the Drone Mobile and Viper SmartStart add-on components, but the EVO-ALL currently only works with Viper. While this capability isn't a must have, it's something I'm considering in the future.
