There was no break-in period. I installed them with my stock HU then put the Clarion mini-amp in a few weeks later. Without the amp, the speakers are a little "dull" but I knew I was going to "amp" them up. Now, it is nice to listen to without having the volume turned up. The nice thing about the Focal's is there's no need for a separate crossover, it is built in the wiring to the "tweeter".

Hmmm - maybe I've got issues. Seems to be missing some mid-range; bass is OK & highs are bright. And I followed your instructions on the tweeter wiring, so phasing is correct ...

I may be overly picky at this point ...

I can tell you if you don't have an amp to "push" the sound, it'll sound blah, to say the least. Put an amp between them and listen easily at 12 to 20. If you want to blast, you can start at 25 and go from there. Plus, it sounds great...just listen....oh well, too bad text can't send sound. :)

Dang - I ALMOST thought I heard something! I am actually thinking about saving up and doing a full system at some point. I think the speakers are getting better, plus the source can be an issue - satellite radio isn't exactly hi quality on all the channels ...

If you're going to do a full system later, get the best speakers you can first.

I have K2 165KRX2's in the front and 165 DS's in the rear doors. No sub. I have considered it but eh; not sure yet. Anyway, to answer your Focal question, I like them. They're run from an Alpine amp and Kenwood DNX7160 head unit.

I just installed these focal speakers up front. Super easy installation. Literally unplug the old flimsy foamy speakers and pop these in. Had to finagle the wire looms a bit to make the connector reach.

I bought an amplifier for my alpine HU that isn't compatible so right now it's running off 18W RMS. They sound good. Better and cleaner than stock. I haven't cranked them up yet because I want to break them in (not sure if this necessary?). I have an Alpine KTP-445U coming in the mail now so i'll update once i get these powered about how they sound.

Gotta put an amp on these things... not to be a dick but getting speakers without an amp is like getting a 6" lift and keeping the stock wheelset... They just go hand in hand.

I have a full focal system, Focal Flax components up front and Focal Access in rear, and honestly they're pretty dissapointing. if i didnt have a ported sub i would sell them without a doubt. still might. My 10 year old MTX speakers in my boat sound as good or better. Bass is flat and punchy, and highs that hurt my ears. No amount of tuning seems to help, and theyre powered by an alpine PDX amp, down to RMS power calculated by a multimeter. Spent $800 on the speakers alone thinking "throw money at it, theyll be sweet!" and am sorely dissapointed.

If you read up on Focal, there are very mixed reviews. Hopefully your guys's sound better than mine!

Is running an aftermarket stereo (Kenwood X799 - 22rms) going to be enough or do these need a full external amp to perform best?

Focal car audio isn't for everyone. really sibilant tweeters and their mids don't go very low. outstanding midrange when on or close to on axis, though.
