I want to move my spare tire to the roof. What if I added a second tank in its place under the bed. Could probably get a 10-15 gallon tank under there. Has anyone done this or thought about doing this?

This could be good, but you would probably have to stack some leafs back there to raise the ass end back up when it's full

I agree I would like to see the option of a large tank so that I could get about 500 miles. Even my friend's big Ram 1500 V8 can do that. Be careful to protect the tank from a rear end collision or you come be another Ford Pinto. Would a long tank mid-truck on the drivers side work better? If I recall there is some room for maybe 10 gallons.

A company in Idaho IIRC makes a replacement 37 gal tank (?) for the Tacoma Double Cab.

I did that when I had a F250, I put a square boat tank in the back with a valve under the truck to switch tanks. It worked good until the truck was stolen with both tanks full. I lived in Colorado at the time and I'm sure they had enough gas to get to Mexico if they could figure out where the valve was.

I only get 120 miles before I need to stop. Well, actually it is the wife that needs to stop.

I have been in some long stretches and would love a few more gallons, I hate the gouging stations and their price fixing. My F150 had factory dual 19 gallon tanks, could get to SF from the border without stopping, or taking the wife.

I seem to recall there were a couple of people who added either an Isuzu Trooper or Mitsubishi Pajero tank under the rear of their first gens with minimal effort so I can't imagine it'd be that hard. Personaly I wouldn't want my spare on the roof full time though; I'll stick with an extra jerry can for those times when I may need extra fuel.

Just something to consider. These trucks have a fairly low carrying capacity compared to full size trucks. A gallon of gas weighs 6 lbs plus the weight of another tank, lines and fuel pump. You could easily add 200 lbs to the trucks weight. Four average sized men in a DC truck, plus the extra gas only leaves about 300 lbs of cargo capacity. A 3000 lb trailers tongue weight would put over the max GVWR.

They come with a 20 gal tank for a reason. I'm not saying, don't do it. Just consider the negatives before pulling the trigger.

These are photos of my 2001 Toyota Tacoma DC where I installed a 15.5 Gallon Auxiliary Tank manufactured by Sunset Metal Fabricators 6/2/14 for $907.00. (Including shipping to NC) Call Chuck Atkinson at (503) 429-0895.

    Mailing Address:
    Sunset Metal Fab
    1062 Rose Ave.
    Vernonia, OR 97064

This included Pump, fuses, and switch, (installed at console). The Auxiliary tank is installed where the Spare Tire did sit, but still allows the Spare Tire to ride below the Auxiliary Tank using the Original Spare Tire Cable and Cradle. My Truck is Lifted about 3" and I still have plenty of clearance (not Rock Climbing). Fuel can be pumped from the Auxiliary Tank to the Primary Tank, even while the Truck is underway. With about 34 Gallons, this increases my range substantially.

As you can see in one of the photos, the silver Filler neck comes out of the Tank from below the frame on the Drivers side Rear wheel well and exits to the inside of the rear tire. Rubbing is not an issue. Since this is the same side of the Primary Fuel tank filler neck, filling both tanks is easy.

This auxiliary tank is baffled also. This tank was designed for the standard and extend cab Trucks. I took a chance that it would work for the DC and it fits like a glove. Hope this helps with anyone considering an Auxiliary Fuel Tank for their First Gen Tacoma.

Auxiliary Tank on the 2001 Toyota Tacoma DC. I wanted to send you guys a little better photo of the Auxiliary Tank Filler as it relates to the Rear Tire and Wheel Well. You can see in the photo below, the silver colored filler neck as it pops out from under the frame and is mounted to the back side of the wheel well so it does not interfere with the travel of the rear tire. In additional, I have included a photo of my Truck.1b6771b93b64c4d15aba9493c5dd7b03_154aeff1faa620ff7b3f0c0b842ba4bf8022f9a7.jpg6a3f69947b931b83918cdfcf5cbbeffa_db88e78f506a19a975d597aec279ba5c48082360.jpg
