Trying to program a new keyless entry remote. I used the following procedure, but my truck will not go into Programming Mode. Any ideas? Thanks.

The vehicle should meet the following conditions before proceeding:
*The key is NOT in the ignition
*Driver’s door is OPEN (The others are CLOSED)
*Drivers door UNLOCKED (Not necessary for Echo)
    1) INSERT and REMOVE the key from the ignition cylinder, TWICE within 5 seconds 2) CLOSE and OPEN the driver’s door TWICE within 40 seconds
    3) INSERT and REMOVE the key into the ignition cylinder
    4) CLOSE and OPEN the driver’s door TWICE within 40 seconds
    5) INSERT the key in the ignition and CLOSE the driver’s door
    6) Turn the ignition switch from LOCK to ON and back to LOCK at approx. 1 sec. Intervals “ 2” times to enter REWRITE MODE
    7) REMOVE the key from the ignition (The door locks are cycled LOCK-UNLOCK within 3 seconds TWICE to let you know that you have selected REWRITE MODE)
    8) Within 40 seconds press BOTH the LOCK & UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter simultaneously for 1 second (Press and release).
    9) Within 3 seconds press and release the LOCK button on the same transmitter (The door locks will cycle ONCE if the transmitter was recognized and TWICE if it was not recognized {if you get two cycles start over}).
    10) Within 40 seconds repeat step 8 and 9 with any other transmitters you wish to program
    11) One of the following will END the Rewrite mode; *40 seconds elapses *Drivers door is opened *Key inserted into the ignition cylinder *4 transmitters are registered

    Step #6 Options:

*1 time it's for add mode
    *2 times for rewrite mode
    *3 times for confirmation mode

For anyone who is interested, I finally got this to work. I located the wireless receiver under the dash (little white box), unplugged it and then plugged it back in, and then the programming instructions worked!

Interesting. My Sister's 2006 Camry keyless entry has stopped working and I can't get the re-program sequence to work. May have to try locating and unplugging the wireless receiver as you did. Thanks for the follow up.

I've been digging around this thread and other threads like it - wanted to share some feedback incase it helps a future person. I found a number of threads with good info, but none included that you CANNOT get your truck into programming mode with the grey "valet" key. My trucks keys and fobs were both lost, and I ended up buying a replacement key from a locksmith, that was chipped to match the valet key. Later I bought some new internet fobs and keys, but could never get my truck into programming mode to add them. -It never occurred to me that both my OEM valet key and it's mirrored chipped key wouldn't work!

Finally took my new fobs and keys to the dealer and got them all flashed and working.

These can be kind of tricky.
I worked at a hardware store and this was a service offered there.

Sometimes we really struggled getting them.

Thanks, I called the company that sold me the remote and they realized they sent me the wrong remote. They sent a remote with a button for a trunk, obviously our trucks don't have trunks.

I'm struggling to even locate the above-pictured box under the dash on my '04 Tacoma (4d PreRunner.)
I'm relatively sure it needs unplugged and plugged in, again. The keyless hasn't been used in a couple of years and I can't get into programming mode for new fob. Help!

You have a Gen 1, so I can't be sure that your setup is the same. When I get some time, I will go down to my truck and see if I can remember where it is exactly.

I will try to get a pic of it on my truck when I get a chance.

Boss has been trying to help but in the meantime, does anyone know the location of the white box and bracket shown above?

Were you able to find it using that diagram?

Yes, when pulling the tabs on the glove box you can get your hand in to unplug the box and plug it back in. Unfortunately for me that didn't work so my guess is that mine has gone bad. My next step is to go to the local junk yard and try one of theirs. Nice part is that once you unplug the box you can plug another one in without actually having to mount it and try the programming sequence to see if the locks cycle in I think step 5. Lucky for me I know a few people in the used car parts so if it is the problem I should be able to get one at a decent price. Another unfortunate thing is that while I have tried to locate and resolve this problem I have learned that my truck has some other issues due to an accident that I was not made aware of and didn't show up on carfax. A big problem when getting a truck from a 2 cent dealer and not an individual. Nothing I can't take care of on my own but still a pain in the butt.
Boss, thanks for the help, much appreciated!

What does the box do? I'm trying to find it under my dash and it doesn't look like I have one. I can see the bracket, but there's nothing there. Unless I'm looking in the wrong spot. But if yours was malfunctioning before, I'm curious to know what it does and why you didn't know it was malfunctioning previously. Part listing just says "Receiver, Door Control". Well, my key works to lock/unlock my doors. I'm trying to program a new secondary fob but can't get into programming mode.

Never mind. I'm an idiot. I didn't read anywhere anyone saying that after removing the glove compartment, you need to also remove the black plastic piece above it by unscrewing the 10mm bolt behind the latch and popping it out. Found the unit there, unplugged, re-plugged and followed the directions in post #1 and got it to work.

Does this box also control the headlights turning on when you lock/unlock the truck? I've been wondering where the control for that comes from, as I've been kicking around the idea of tying in my rear flood lights so I have 360 degree arrival/departure lights or whatever they're called. My parents' cars do this and I wish my truck did too.

I just wanted to add in my experience. One day the fob stopped working, thought it was the battery so changed it with no luck. Found threads saying to reprogram it but couldn't get it into program mode. Found this thread with info about unplugging the module and that did the trick. For those having trouble finding it, it's easiest to pull the glove box out, and then grab a 10mm socket at remove the plastic cover plate that is attached at the glove box latch. Then if you lay on your back on the floor of the passenger seat, you will see the white module that needs unplugging.
