Has anyone installed a transmission temperature gauge that does not need a connection to the trans oil line, ie a gauge with a sensor that makes a direct mechanical connection to the transmission, or oil pan?
Links, pics, of unit and results of operation would be helpful.
    Thanks, J

A scan gauge can display the transmission temps.

A friend of mine epoxied a temperature sensor to the pan of the auto trans on his F350.

Thanks for the post and link, Herniator. Got Scangauge II, programmed it for two trans. temps per link above. On 2017 TRD 3.5 AT OR AC. A bit tricky to get codes in with cursor and +/- for letters and numbers, but it appears to be working. It is important to note that Xgauge is kind of a software subset of the Scanguage II unit. Programming notes are in back of user manual.
It connected fine after starting engine. Version of new unit purchased is 4.22. You just select display of trans temp codes like others that come preinstalled, like RPM, etc. I mounted it on dash rim above air vent left of radio with HD sticky velcro. When you stop/restart it saves selected display items. With fuel mileage already installed stock, not too interested in repeating that, but want Trans. temp and other "Xgauges".
Will follow and see how it works- and monitor temps. I expect to tow 2000# +/- over passes of 10-11K ft. where there is less cooling capacity due to thinner air.
Many thanks for info from community, esp. Gearcruncher for maintining Trans thread. J
