We always get into "why did you spend a grand on a gun vs why did you spend a grand on shocks?" debates at work

Show them a picture of a taco flying threw the air and say I can't do that with a $1000.00 weapon. But I can with $1000.00 shocks. But seriously Lauren you are putting LT on your truck you have to jump it. But do it in 2wd I wouldn't trust Napa axles jumping in 4wd.

Posted this in the General CO forum, but it was recommended I post here, so.....

So, new to the forum and Tacomas and could use some assistance.

Have a 2007 DCSB that I'm wanting to do some mods on so we can hit some of the back roads and jeep trails here in CO. My initial thought is a 2.5" lift so I can avoid UCAs. For now, the truck will not have much in the way of add ons, but I could see us doing a bed rack and an RTT at some point. So, as I contemplate this lift, I want to use parts that won't require me to totally scrap everything I add now. My initial thought is just run some Bilstein 5100s and an AAL, then if we add an RTT, I can pick up Dakars or something similar.

Also, as I look at upgrading tires, I need to keep in mind that the truck will most likely see some highway miles this year, including a trip to Arkansas, Dallas and, perhaps, Georgia. I MIGHT just keep a second set of wheels/tires for those trips, but I might not. I'm leaning towards Duratracs or S/T Maxx tires. With a 2.5" lift what size tire would work well?

    Thanks in advance!

    Giff

Welcome Giff and nice of you to choose the 2 most controversial topics in here to start out with (Lift and Tires/ size). Expect about 50 answers that all will be different and no help to making any decision.

Overall, seems like a sensible plan.
I'd avoid the Duratracs. They have nice grip (although I personally think their sidewalls are shit), but they are a softer compound tire and may not hold up well to a lot of highway miles. My 2nd gen with a 2.5 lift easily fit 285/75-16's with little to no rub. I was on aftermarket wheels which pushed the tires out a little bit, though.

And yet every EMS service in the mountains runs DuraTracs, God I so hate this argument anymore.

No no, if he coats his tires with Mobile 1 then any tire size will work well!

In all seriousness I'd stick with a tire that has a good tread pattern and keep it at the stock 31 or 32" size since you're doing a lot of highway and then spend cash to get beefy armor/sliders and suspension upgrades. Alternatively there are a ton of cheap rims out there for sale; you could get a second set and put the giant offroading wheels on that set of rims.
