hi all got a 4.88 gear change question . I have a 17 access cab utility 4x4 4cylinder automatic. My question is im soon going up to 255 85 16s I currently have 4.30 gears. Would going up to 4.88s from my 4.30s be enough of a jump to get back to stock. Lots of hills were im from and my commute is far so any help would be great .Thank you in advance for your time and help

The above excel sheet should answer all your questions!

mopar, whats the difference between the mini kit that's selling for 875, versus the other kit that's for 1375?

The mini and master install kits. With the mini kit you reuse some of your old bearings. With the master you get new everything. I'd spend the coin to get the master install kit.

For those that have the 4.88's installed, how does the truck's power feel at 1500 RPM (or below), say in 4th gear? With the stock gearing, it feels like I have very little power and the truck ends up downshifting to 3rd. I'm just curious if the 4.88's now make the truck noticeably more responsive in the lower RPM's that the truck likes to shift at.

I just picked up my truck today from the shop with 4.88 regear..... its night and day. I'm so pumped. It held 5th going over a fairly steep overpass at 40mph no problem. RPM was like 1100. Before I was downshifting. I run 33's LT Toyo's. Highway tomorrow I'll post the results.

Yes automatic transmission. I'm a big fan of re gear from an engineering perspective and the way it feels. If your even considering it, do it.

Would anyone recommend doing air lockers at the same time you do the gears, if you are thinking about it. Since you would be in the diffs already?

Without a doubt. I have a TRD off road and I did the front. If you don't have an electric real locker I'd definately do both.

I just installed 4.88 gear and also recommend doing front air lockers. They are awesome.

I got 4.56s at San Diego Gear and Axle. It's awesome, but I'm pretty sure if I did it all over again I'd do 4.88s and lockers. I have a Sport Auto and a lot of extra weight running 285/70/17 I never thought I'd get in a situation where I'd need lockers, but then this weekend happened. And the 4.56s are great, I just never thought people would see 2000 rpms with the 4.88s on the highway but I was wrong.
