I like bright headlights. Makes me see better at night. I am going to switch to HID lights and was wondering of anyone has installed the brighter 55w HID bulbs? Do you think they would be too hot for the headlight casings and melt things or do other damage?

How about 55w bulbs in the flood lights?

    Thanks all!

I have morimoto 55w, I have had no issues over the last few months. Other than the ridiculous amount of bulb bouncing that the retrofitsource swears is my housing and not the product.

Pretty many run 55w in projector retrofits. Not sure about stock halogen housings. I run 35w in retrofits with projectors and find them to be highly adequate.

First of all, I fixed your grammar. Shitty grammar elicits shitty responses.

50W HID capsules in the stock housings are a less than stellar idea. They put off an insane amount of UV which will scorch your reflector bowl. Very few projector housings are made for 50W capsules. The MD2S 3.0 and up from TRS can handle it because of the headroom and bowl design. Just keep that in mind when you shove those 50W capsules and ballasts under the hood if you decide on that option.

35w, 5500k TRS bulbs are awesome. I've been very happy with the upgrade.

Yeah I'd agree that 50-55W might fry your projector lens. I use 35W Blitz Opt-7 and I've had zero issues besides the occasional bounce.

55w user here. No issues. Also ran 55w in my Honda Pilot back in the days for 7 years...no issues.

Are you referring to your cutoff bouncing?

I'd say with the exception of your "shitty" response (your word, not mine), I received some very nice responses! What is wrong with you? Why do people like you even respond? Still angry Hillary did not get elected?

Many thanks to everyone else for your wonderful and thoughtful responses!

Yes. It's only noticeable when you're looking for it. It gets annoying but I try to make a point of ignoring it.

Plenty are running 55w without issues, but I can tell you I went with 35w ballasts from TRS and they are bright as hell. I literally can't think of a reason to need 55w. If I offroaded regularly and needed to light up the world I'd have some lightbars for that.

The scorch takes a while, it isn't an overnight thing. Output will slowly lessen over months and years. Keep in mind this truck and its halogen projectors are less than two years old. It's not if, just when. You'll still have light output, it will just become less sharp with zero hotspot when it finally happens.

Running 55w DDMs here and they are fine. So far nothing has melted. I guess time will tell right. Been running 55w DDMs in my 1998 240sx for about 6 yrs and they are still fine as well.

Just so everyone understand what scorch looks like and why it's not a good thing. The bowl is cast aluminum with a special chroming process. The excess UV literally burns that chrome off and you no longer reflect light which turns your output to garbage. Nothing melts, it just ruins a good headlight assembly. See image.

No problem and you're welcome, I may or may not have spent way too much time on HIDPlanet.com...:rofl::rofl:

That bowl is from a BiX housing, Mini H1 I believe. Same concept. The MD2S has a different bowl shape. See image. Halogen is on the right, D2S is on left. The bowl is larger and has more headroom allowing for the additional output of the 50W capsule.
