So my clutch pedal is squeaking and I can see the bushing are shot (and missing)...has anyone ever had the assembly actually fail in some way because of this? or is it simply a noisy annoyance? I would prefer not to go through with the bushing replacement - major pia....WD40 makes the noise go away for a month or 2

Just remove the noisey spring and replace it with a linear 70# spring I believe. Search clutch linear spring mod.

I don't think there's a chance it will fail the way the stock spring is set up. I suppose in theory, with metal on metal and enough clutch engagements you could wear through that middle fork that the spring sits in, but I don't think you could even get close in a lifetime of normal driving.

I did the brass bushing replacement and it fixed the sound entirely, and also maintains stock clutch feel/arrangement which I like. A little hassle, but not much. Maybe an hour total to remove the pedal assembly, grind/fit the brass bushing and re-install. I just left the and "cup" bushings out and I have no noise. Some people seem to still get a little noise from those spring ends but they would be easy to replace while you've got the spring out...

But if the WD-40 is preferable to you I think you're perfectly safe to keep doing it as far as pedal failure goes.

I replaced the little plastic parts with Genuine Toyota Parts and later they failed. I removed them and the torsion spring and reinstalled the pedal assembly. I used a linear spring like the guy above suggested and have had no problems since then. That was 4 years ago.
