They could be prioritizing certain trim models over others to start with.

I talked to my dad last night and told him about the recall. He's in his 70's and used to build his own stock cars to race when he was younger. He indicated that a leaking differential is an easy fix and considers it a minor recall.

So I asked "what would be a major recall" and he said anything engine or transmission related. He seems to think that it's simple to open the diff up, replace gasket, then torque bolts to specification.

I'm not mechanically inclined like my dad and his dad but I would have to think that a differential problem would be third on the list of things I wouldn't want to screw up on my new car. Third only after engine failure or tranny failure.

I think his opinion is based on complexity of the fix versus a catastrophic failure issue.

I told him "at least if it's leaking you know it has oil." He laughed and said "yeah like an old Harley". Then he mentioned that if it runs out of oil it will definantly seize and to avoid this at all costs.

Also I asked him about any "howling noise" from the back and what could cause this. He said it would most likely be a bearing.

I thought his view on the issue was interesting and I wanted to pass it on to TW. Hope this helps put things in perspective.

It is a simple fix, but the fact in the recall it states that the bolts will be also replaced is a red flag.

Agreed. This is a major problem. Hopefully, Toyota enforces that this is unacceptable.

That issue by itself is worriesome. I didn't bring that up specifically to my dad but it adds a whole layer of complexity.

I started wondering about the bolt issue when a TW member tried to tighten his bolts himself and he broke a bolt. Appeared to shear off. As I was typing "that isn't supposed to happen" the thread got locked down.

It was the early thread where the OP was offering to search everyone's VIN I think. Let me see if I can find it. I think it's the one Smitty caught flak on.

I purchased my DCLB OR 4x4 on 4/26. The truck was built on 4/17 and nothing shows up on the VIN search regarding this issue. I've got 65 miles on the truck and today I noticed a very slight amount of oil pooling at the bottom of the differential - not enough to even start forming a droplet. I looked all over the differential hoping maybe it was residual spillage from when they filled the differential but area around the fill plug is dry. It's obviously coming from the seal.

My guess is the Off Road models will not leak until the warrenty has expired. This will allow Toyota to make back some money on out of warrenty repairs.

    Good strategy on their part.

It's only been a few days...... recalls and amendments to them can last for years so I wouldn't be surprised if ORs are added by the June notification period.

Jesus you guys are speculating some paranoid stuff.

How many of you fellow OR owners have now been entering your VIN everyday since it was announced hoping you hit the list? :goingcrazy:
