I pinned 9 on the s8 connector but the controls don't illuminate. I grounded on the ground on the steering column. Any thoughts?

2013 OEM regular non entune did not use the head unit but rather the rear view mirror.

Hard to tell where the black wire is in your picture. You also didn't state it but I would guess you also connected a wire from pin 3 back to pin 24 (R15 connector) on the radio. Holding the plug as shown here, here's the pin out just to double check you have them in the right spots.

I stated I pinned #9. I was trying to get illumination on the controls. Not Pin 3 to pin 24. I forgot to mention the red wire in the second picture is the the black wire as I had to use a bigger wire to connect my connection to the ground portion. Apologies there.

Turns out the picture similar to what you shared is hard to decipher. You need to know which side you are looking at which is where I messed up. Female or Male side so to speak. I had counted #9 pin from the Male side when the image is looking at it from the Female side where the terminals are inserted into the connector. So technically I was pinned in #10 not #9. I moved the terminal over one slot and it worked. I forgot to update this thread. I had also asked it in another thread that folks were doing the same mod.

Now I just need to figure out why my Climate Control/HVAC panel is now dimly lit.

Sorry if this is a repeat question but I've read so much on this subject and I'm still not clear. If I have a 2013 non-nav, non-sat, non-voice command button & non-jbl, just regular display audio, head unit, what do I need to buy to have Navigation, voice command and Satellite radio? I honestly don't care about JBL or entune.

On a side note, I currently have a 2006 access cab TRD Offroad Prerunner with speakers in the rear access door. It came with the basic radio. This 2013 access cab TRD Offroad 4WD I'm looking to buy doesn't even have rear speakers. Is this just a case of Toyota cheaping out and not adding 2 more speakers?

I have the same radio. You will need to buy a new head unit (2014-15 or Aftermarket) and GPS Antenna since our truck did not come with one. Not sure about access cab. I have a DC and it has rear door speakers.

I honestly just use my phone and google maps. So it depends on what you want to do. The Nav units I believe are all Entune radios. Some have Nav and some do not.

If you go with a stock radio you will need to buy the xm radio portion add on.

Ok thanks. Sounds like it gets expensive quick to go OEM. Having to get the Nav unit, antenna and xm tuner add on. Even though I prefer the OEM look and would like to keep the steering wheel controls (but would have to add the voice command). The nav units on ebay are $1500!!!! Plus would have to get the xm tuner. Sounds like I may have to go aftermarket and get the steering wheel control adapter.

I found the speakers. They are under the headliner directly above your head and they suck! I have no idea why they moved them.

Yah it adds up. I just use my phone for Nav via BR. I was going to swap in an entune radio as there is an adaptor to mirror your phone. So technically you could show your nav that way. Down the line I'll prob go aftermarket as you can't beat the sound quality upgrade if some right.

Do you know if a 2016 Nav unit (non JBL) will fit a 2013 (non JBL)?

I just looked on ebay at a 2016 nav unit and a 2014. Looking at photos of the back of the radios, it appears the plugs are identical. Opuradio sells 2016 nav units for $300 but it doesn't look like they come with the XM tuner. So there's another $200-$300. And then there's fitting it into the existing space. I know aftermarket is so much easier and cheaper but of course the factory system is so much cleaner and integrates better.

I'll be doing this soon. I have a 2013 with steering wheel controls. I'll be swapping in the 2015 controls. So, I'll be adding the two wires to the S8 connector. Please correct me if I'm wrong on the following.
The 3 & 9 positions are currently empty.
Just need to push in the correct pinn size.
Same for the 24 position on the 28 pin radio connector?

I can't recall but the 24 positing in the 28 may be a different connector. I pinned the 9 on the S8 and got it setup for the 3 but have not done that yet. Need to go back and do that. I did find the perfect connector (just need to crimp onto a wire) which is .15 cents or so. Let me look that up but it was perfect for the s8 connector. I have a couple other I need to try on the s28 to make sure it works. As of now my steering lights up perfect, I just do not have the extra controls the S28 fixes.

Yes. This is correct. The pins on the S8 connector and the pins on the 28 pin connector are the same. And those slots are empty on the 2013. I just finished installing the 2015 controls tonight and running the extra wires. All works perfectly.

Did you take any photos of the Connecotrs and wires? I need to run the s8/s28 still. Good to know they are the same connectors.

That would be dope. Now I need to find the damn 24 connector. Been wanting to get it to show up on the display too. Now I need to figure that as well. Let me know. Anyway you can score one of those from? not sure if you still work at the dealer.

PM me your address. I think I have enough for you to do the S8/28 and the backup camera. Should be 7 in total. It's a matter of finding the right pins on the junk harnesses. Sometimes it's like finding a needle in a haystack kinda metaphor. Follow my other thread for the backup camera deal. It's not that hard. You can order the connector from Toyota. Should be about $10 or less.
