i tried his ECT button. it helped a lot, no doubt. it helped the shifting enough to slow me from going totally mad, from that restless tranny, but after a few more minutesi was totally mad anyway.

    restless tranny... :p

I test drove an A/T and a M/T when shopping around for my Tacoma as I read up that a lot of people were unhappy with the A/T's searching for gears. I found the M/T the be quite finicky and not as much feel as I've had in previous M/T's I've owned (they've all been cars tho) When I test drove the automatic I took it through the city and on the highway and had zero issues with what I've heard from other people.

3 months later and still haven't had any issues with my A/T, I've used it to tow with no issue and setting it on cruise on our road trips haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary. Maybe this was more of an issue with the 2016's but my 2017 has been nothing but a pleasure to drive on and off road.

Man this hasn't been my experience at all. I was pleasantly surprised with the shifter feel in mine, and 20k miles later it still feels good. Have also never had it be a pain to go into reverse. I dunno what hot trash feels like so I can't comment on that at all. Maybe I'm just biased because the other manual truck I've driven was our '89 F-150 and it was a bear. But I also came from a GTI to my Tacoma and VW gearboxes are really well sorted. The truck didn't feel noticeably different to me than that. I find that I have to do the 'clutch trick' to get it to go into a gear every once in a great while.

Anyways, the availability of a stick is why I'm even here instead of in an F-150. I like feeling engaged while I drive and it's the number 1 theft deterrent device in America!

Restless tranny? Maybe it needs therapy so it can learn to be happy where it is. You know, when you're in third, the grass isn't always greener in fourth. While you were in Colorado you should have swung through Boulder. We have therapy for everything here: dog therapy, cat therapy, goat therapy... Goat therapy can mean therapy for your nervous goat, or using goats as therapy for nervous humans. I'm not kidding (haha "kid"). See story on goat yoga: http://www.dailycamera.com/news/boulder/ci_30943099/goat-yoga-boulder
I'm gonna quit my job and start doing therapy for 3rd gen Tacoma ATs. I'll make a killing in Boulder.

I'm old and lazy and prefer AT now over MT. When I was younger, I loved MT.

Some days I wish for a manual but only because I have been driving them for 25+ years. This is my first slushbox and it behaves about what I would expect from a truck in this age of fuel efficiency.

All I needed therapy for in Boulder was slogging through traffic going from Golden Gate to RMNP. Having to stop every 3 seconds to watch a bunch of hipsters jaywalk was the worst.

It took 52 posts before someone played the man card. Must be some kind of record for TW. I'm too sad to celebrate as I learned I don't have a real truck though.

No regrets with the AT on my TRD Sport DCLB (OK, maybe the scoop). Having had both a Gen 2 and Gen 1 in the AT, I've really never regretted the AT in any of them. My last MT was an '87 4Runner (4 cyl.) and while I loved that truck, I told myself when I sold it that I would never buy another MT. Plus, I am very pleased with the bells and whistles on my TRD Sport, even though I could happily live without some of them, like the moonroof and rear power sliding window.

My only regret is the overall length of the truck. For urban driving, where I do much of my time behind the wheel, it can be a challenge to park and negotiate around tight corners. But I'm adjusting . . .

    Nope!

Mine is fine so far. Ran it purely with ECT turned on the first month. Been running it in the default config this month. I'm a little heavy footed so I've been teaching it to be aggressive. :D

    Mostly city driving. Averaging 17mpg.

I already have a fake truck since it's only RWD so didn't feel bad about getting the auto ;).

Use the right tool for the job.

Believe me, I don't feel bad at all. Nothing wrong with 2wd if it fits your needs.

Yes, I regret getting the automatic. So much so that I plan on getting rid of the truck next spring.
