It is near the end of my thread. Dealer changed front body mounts, shock mounts, and replaced front shocks. They couldn't identify the exact culprit, even with sound scopes attached. Therefore, they swapped out the shocks and mounts and said it took care of the problem. They ordered new ones and also did the body mounts while it was in which was recommended by Toyota when the mechanic opened a case about the problem.

I just went through this I took it to the dealer they found it was the lower shock bushings. The bushings had torn and were causing a clicking/clunking noise I threw on my coilovers and noise was gone.

When offroad and coming down hills and flexing the suspension pretty far, I was getting some metallic popping noises up front from both sides. That was at 1000 miles and when driving normally it hasn't made the noises since.

I was thinking it might be Russian surveillance equipment.

well...I knew it was coming but I took a chance. Made appointment. Show up and play a sound clip of the noise. Also played the video Bob_S provided and told them it was a common issue and what was causing the noise. "MISC-UNKNOWN-COULD NOT DUPLICATE CONCERN". The issue at the dealer is who pays for it. If they can't DIAGNOSE it by actually having it repeat for them, Toyota won't pay for it. I could have shown them every forum case of it and it would not have mattered. If they don't hear it, no go. I guess I could have drove the dude around until I found the speed humps but f it. I will switch out the shocks myself. My sheet says it's a large speed bump caused problem but I walked away so I didn't have to explain it's a load, unload, load on the suspension issue.

I have the same noise . When I go over a bump it’s sounds like it’s metal to metal. I went to Toyota and they said that is normal.( BS) I’ve driven lots of Tacoma , I’ve never heard that noise . Dealer said bring truck in so they can document it..

It's not normal. It's the driver side front strut/shock. I had posts, videos, and recorded sound from my own and my dealer said can't help you if we don't hear it ourselves. Replaced them all with 5100's and no more noise and much improved ride.

Do you have your stock mud flaps on the front still? They are stupid low and will hit on speed bumps making a lot of noise, mine did it on my 2011 with stock suspension and stock flaps, you should be able to tell because they will be all rough on the bottom. A lift or sawzall will fix it

Did the dealer replace struts? Or did you pay out of pocket ? Did you put a go pro while driving to figure out it’s the struts?

Dealer did not and I really wasn't interested at that point having the same thing put back on it. I went elsewhere and got the bilstein 5100's all around and leveled it at the same time. Gopro not necessary. It was already determined by other folks here. See if this is what you are hearing.

Similar noise only when I turn into driveway. The mechanic these days are only part changers . They have no clue unless their computer is hooked into a car.

I had the same issue and been to Toyota dealership 4 times. The first visit they replaced the driver side shock and it helped but the problem moved over to the passenger side. The second visit they replaced the lower control arm and it helped a tiny bit but the noise was there and it got worse over time. Fast forward to the 4th visit and they replaced the passenger side shock. Fixed the problem but I got the same comments that it is normal, need to recreate problem, etc. I was persistent and went multiple times. In addition, I got that extendo warranty tho. No more clank, clunk noise and I am lucky the dealership has been patient with my complaints.

    Bob,

That’s similar to the noise my 2017 is making. It happens on the drivers side front when I’m making a right turn and the street is somewhat dipped.

Been to dealer, but of course they say they can replicate the sound.

What did you use to make the video?

    Thanks much appreciated.

Just attached a gopro. Mine made the noise going over a speed hump (raised about 5 inches 3 ft long in neighborhoods) not bump at about 15mph. After the fix I posted, I have not had any problems. good luck!
