There were two filter threads just last week ... Many of us use extra capacity filters. I had been using Wix 51516, but will next be using the slightly larger 51515, plus an extra half quart of oil. When it comes to oil filters, larger is better, but there are practical limits. Car manufacturers will use the smallest size they can get away with to save a dollar, which can translate into millions over the millions of cars they sell.

Use OEM...when in doubt check your owner's manual.

This thread title would suggest it's stuck and you've tried everything short of an air chisel.

I use Mobil One Synth and the Fram Extra Guard PH8A filter (ford 351 V8). I drain the oil sump and refill every 10,000 miles and change the filter, too. I then change the filter at 3,300 miles and again at 6,700 miles and top off the oil with the filter change, always one quart. This is what I started doing on the day I got my 2007 V6/auto PreRunner Sport which I bought in Feb 2009 with 30,000 miles on the odometer as I drove off the lot. It was totaled on 6/23/17 with 142,639 miles as I signed it over to the insurance company. It always showed full on the dipstick every time I checked between oil and filter changes.

It took a while to find a replacement, but on 9/11/17, I won an eBay auction for a 2007 V6/auto PreRunner SR5 with 28,012 miles. I'm almost ready to start the same oil routine at 30,000 miles.

I was committed to taking the first Taco to 250,000 miles and had a minor setback, that is, it was totaled. My goal remains to see the odometer roll at 250,000 miles, I just had to start over at just under 30K miles with this replacement PreRunner.

This replacement Taco was bought new by the ebay seller. He only drove it to box stores and nurseries on weekends and otherwise kept it in his garage. He replaced the original tires the week before the auction, replaced the battery then too, and did the TSB for the rear leaf springs the day before it was signed-over to me. I've been busy redoing mods I did 8+ years ago. While I miss the steering wheel controls for the radio, otherwise this replacement is like coming home, again.

My oil regimen worked for 112,000 miles on the first Taco, I'm betting my engine it will work on the second, too.

Not sure about your 250k comment. There is at least one member over 400k.

OP, maximum filter media surface area is what makes for the best filter. There have been a few tests done. I haven't seen any filters that out performed the stock filter.

If others have made it to 400K+, all the better for them. My goal is 250K. Of that I'm sure.

If Toyota can squeeze more filter media in a stock filter than in a Fram PH8A, so what? I know what has worked for me for more than 110K miles. If you're happy with the Toyota recommended filter, use it. I don't care.

I haven't seen any filter tests, again, I don't care. I have seen my own 2007 Tacoma go 142K+ miles with my own regimen, and use no oil at any and all dip stick checks. My data, not a published filter test. Use what you want, I will too. And I still hope to see the odometer on my replacement Taco turn 250K miles.

How far has your Taco gone?

My 2012 has a bit over 95k miles so far.

I wasn't bashing you or Fram, or any person or brand. The OP asked for suggestions, so I offered mine.

The devil is in the details. The stock Toyota filter for the 4.0 V6 is less than half the size of the Fram PH8A spec'd for a Ford V8. The stock Toyota filter can be removed with the engine cover in place, that won't happen with the bigger Ford V8 filter.

As mentioned previously, synthetic oil will last a long time, if it's kept clean. That's why I do two filter changes in between oil changes (oil & filter, @ 3300 change filter and top off oil, @ 6700 change filter and top off oil, @ 10K repeat.)

I have always done 5-6k changes. Never trusted fram tho as my friend had his blow the seal out on the interstate. After that fram has been in my shart list (plus they dont even use metal end caps or silicon anti drain backs, or coil springs, and the filter media is always so uneven its crazy). To each there own though. Use what works for you

After further research, reading here and watching some vids, I'm amending my position on oil filters.

I feel, no empirical data, that the success of my original Taco with synth oil (specifically Mobil One), despite going 10K mile change intervals, and using Fram filters, is due in part to changing the filters every 3300 miles. That 2007 4.0 V6/auto PreRunner TRD Sport Access Cab went 142K miles before being totaled in a freeway wreck. At the last oil change, 2K miles previous, the oil level was good, no usage.

It's replacement, also a 2007 4.0 V6/auto PreRunner Access Cab (SR5 instead of TRD Sport) came to me on 9/11/17 with 28,012 miles and is about due for an oil change. I ordered the 90915-YZZD3 ten pack via eBay. I will stay with Mobil One and 10K intervals but will change the Toyota filter at 5K miles (and top off the oil).

I'm not sure what filter is currently on the replacement Taco. It is a Toyota filter and installed at a Toyota dealer where the previous owner had all service done. It is tiny, much smaller than the Frams I have previously used. The Frams are smaller than the Toyota filters I ordered and referenced in the linked thread.

This thread was the most informative for me:

At the store by all the filters there is a book that tells you what size filter to get for each manufacturer
