Can't get my 285's balanced. Should I try beads or a different shop?

18 oz is a tire problem!. Look for a shop to road force balance

    Are the wheels hub centric
    Are the wheels lug centric
This is something you might find can cause a ride disturbance if the wheels aren't 100% snug
You should inquire or check them yourself. If they are not hub centric then you will need an adapter to snug them up.

So the wrong lug nuts can cause a disturbance as well.check figment and replace if necessary.
The tire shop can use an adapter that bolts up to the lug hole instead of the hub opening. Many custom or aftermarket wheels require such an adapter.

By the way, if the tires keep requiring a lot of weight, take them to the Michelin/Bfg authorized dealer and see about getting a warranty adjustment.
Also I would be curious to know what air pressure you are running

And last.... how wide are the wheels? They need to be within the tire manufacturers guidelines

Sorry, I didn't update the thread since last weekend's update before heading to Discount. They got them straight. The two shops before just stunk. They said they balanced out and are within spec. Shake seems to be mostly gone.. still some slight occasional vibes on certain surfaces or grades, but I'll chalk that up to the E rating. Lesson learned, drive out of the way to go straight to a Discount Tire next time!

I know 3 out of 4 of my tires needed a good about of weight. I'll have to see how much when I get home.

Anything more than maybe 8oz at the very most is a tire or wheel problem. Or who ever is balancing isn't doing it correctly. A road force can determine if its the tire or not. Then you can eliminate other options

i use beads successfully on my beadlocks. They get beat up pretty hard and stay balanced as a dd.

That’s ridiculous, that much weight changed the GVW of the truck! ....just kidding.

Damn, I had my front wheels off for the cab chop and now the shake is back. It got progressively worse today, which makes me think it might be my lugs as someone pointed out before.

These are what I’m running: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/gor-21138etbc

I’m pulled over as I post this because the shake was so bad I wanted to check to make sure my lugs were still tightened

How were the lugs tightened? I’m running Methog 310’s with the same style lugs. I had the same problem after installing them with 265’s. Put them back on the balancer and the roads forced and balanced good. Found that if you tighten one lug at a time it will not be centered. Run the lugs in a little at a time and it will center the wheel. You can't run a hub centric ring on these wheels as there is not enough room but is not centered on the hub.

Thank you, that's good to know. A shop did the chop so they likely torqued them down all the way individually. I'll take them off tomorrow and tighten a bit at a time and see where it gets me..

I've had perfectly balanced wheels feel unbalanced many times due to how they were bolted onto the truck. If I torque them using a star pattern to 30, then 60, then final torque, they are fine. If I let a tire monkey (I used to be one) with an impact gun mount them, the truck drives like a shopping cart with a fucked up wheel.

I really think this is the issue with most "unbalanced wheel" issues on Tacomas.

Wanna add to this...as a former tech, after a proper balancing, I've always had good results when torquing each lug to around 30 lb ft, then lowering the lift enough where the tires are just touching the ground, then torquing to spec. The techs who just blast the lugs on with the impact usually were the ones who had customers coming back for vibration issues. Even with a torque stick on a gun, the trigger can't be pulled too long, or one runs the risk of messing things up.
