I have been experiencing issues with my clutch in my new tacoma. I have experienced what feels and smells like a slipping clutch. I purchased the vehicle with just under 36k miles on it, and am nearing 37k. I was wondering if anyone has experienced similar premature wear on the clutch, or if I can just thank the previous owner?

If I'm up a creek on the clutch situation, what brand of aftermarket clutch and lightweight flywheel have you had good luck with? I figure if I'm replacing things may as well over do it.

I'm not aware of any premature wear issue, but people can definitely ruin a clutch in 36K. I've got 165K on mine, and it is fine. It's all in how you drive, and whether you can shift properly.

You do understand the pros and cons of a lighter flywheel right? A lighter flywheel is not an "upgrade". It is typically a race modification where street drivability is not a consideration. In a nut shell, you use a lighter flywheel to get your engine to rev faster. The trade off is more critical shifting. Your truck will stall much more easily when taking off too. Most people can barely drive a stick with a stock weight flywheel. I lighter one means you have to be on point every shift.

Thanks u/badger for the information. Sounds like I just need to stick to putting a clutch in n the truck and leaving it alone. Any guesses on the cost of that? Also, any suggestions on clutches to replace it with or just go with stock. I'm planning on light wheeling and light towing if that helps.

Light flywheels are super fun for small displacement high revving engines like in a Honda car (I actually feel like it's easier to rev match that way)! In a truck it would probably be very unwise especially in low speed off-road situations. I'd personally see if you could get your own flywheel re surfaced or replace with oem. As for clutches, a lot of people like to go URD stage 2. While your there you could also install the URD TOB quill sleeve or go even further and do the hydro TOB mod to prevent the eventual TOB chirp that happens on the 6 speed. Good luck!
