If you want a cooler engine just run a colder thermostat. That being said, my scoop is functional because fake scoops are lame as hell.

    Have you considered hood louvers?

Already did that. It has made a big difference but we are in the middle of winter so I don't know if it will provide the same performance when the temps start heating up. If it does then no problem and I probably wont bother with the hood. If it doesn't make a difference I will keep exploring more options, one of which is this hood.

Based on what I have read those would be better. The problem is nobody makes a louvered hood for tacomas to my knowledge and body work is not my strong suit.

McNeil makes one. I'm just not sure if it's functional or just for looks

I think theirs only is for the 05-11 trucks. Mine is a 2013.

I would consider something like this if I had a second hood to try it on. Don't want to cut and drill my current hood and it not be functional or look good.

Nowhere near as much debris, water, and dust as comes in from the bottom I'd wager.

With louvers like that facing the windshield whenever you are moving air would be pushing out of the louvers so it would be pushing dust away, water yes for sure but I've been rinsing my engine compartment weekly for ten years with no issues so non issue really.

That is a debatable topic as well because the 4.0 is designed to run at the temp range the OE thermostat provides. I've read a few times that it is not good to run it colder

I would agree with this until you start introducing forced induction applications. My truck always was fine until the supercharger was introduced and then my average temps jumped up from operating between 180-192 stock to 195-210 supercharged. I added the URD high performance thermostat so that it opens sooner and am now back down to the 182-188 temp range during normal operations.

Sure thing, that makes complete sense with the increased temps from your SC. It's something crazy like +10 degrees intake temp for every pound of boost right ?

That's what I have read on the forums. I usually peak at around 6lbs of boost up here at 5000-6000 feet so roughly a 60 degree intake temp increase.

Yea, so if your engine is not running a turbo or supercharger no sense in having an open scoop, but having a blocked scoop does seem a bit lame,

And I peak at 10 pounds at 6000 feet, so I'm definitely happy with a working scoop
