    Hey guys,

This is my first thread on the forum and I need some help.

I was driving home from work yesterday evening and I went to pass someone on the Interstate and my truck down shifted from 5th to 4th gear. Once the truck went to shift back into 5th I got a hard "thud" but the truck did shift into 5th. I was close to home so I figured I would take it easy and assess once I was there. Even closer to home upon going up a hill the truck down shifted again and then while shifting back up I got the same thing.. and then all of a sudden it was as if the truck had went into neutral and there was no 5th. There was a slight whining noise as I was pulling off of the Interstate to try and figure out what happened. No leaks or anything, but for a moment the truck would not go into gear at all. I turned the truck off and let it sit for a moment and then restarted and it went into gear. I managed to get home (2 miles or so away) going slow with my hazards on, but had to run it in 4 because as the truck tries to shift into 5th gear it does the same thing as stated before. The truck did have sufficient trans fluid (I checked when I got home after allowing it to cool down a bit). Any helpful advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,

I don’t know exactly what the problem is with your tranny but I had the same thing happen in a Tundra I previously owned. When the dealer pulled the tranny they found chunks of metal in it. Tranny was toast, needed a new one. What ever it is it sounds serious going to cost some bucks. If the truck is not under a warranty I’d take it to a good independent transmission shop as it will probably be a lot cheaper than a dealer.

74k miles on her. So I ran a diagnostic on the truck last night and error code P2714 is coming up, which means that there is an issue with the pressure control solenoid "D" or SLT. I have been trying to find a part # for that specific solenoid and have been unsuccessful in my efforts so far. From my understanding that solenoid is not accessible from outside the transmission. Can anyone provide a part number or good reference on where to purchase one?

I believe I have found the part number and it looks like I should be able to replace it by just dropping the pan. Does that seem like a plausible assumption?

    Thanks.

Thank you. Is there a reason that the solenoids are so much more expensive on this site than others? 400-600$ seems pretty high. I have found others around 140-230$.

I had a similar problem but in my between 3rd and 4th gear. I did a ton of research and reached out to the xmsn thread already posted. Fortunately my UG told me what was happened as soon as my truck refused to shift gears and made a rough and loud THUD while accelerating on the interstate around a slow moving car. Here was my case:

"my ultra gauge showed the pending P0776 code, which told me it was either the SLT or SL2 (both are utilized in the switching from 3rd to 4th gear, which is where mine was hanging up). I did have the toyota dealer verify on their machine the same code. Toyota told me they wont open the xmsn, only swap out a new one ($3000+) which I called bullshit on. I bought the two solenoids, OEM (203 + 223$$) and had a reputable xmsn shop replace it. it seems easy, but I was about to move from GA to WA and didnt have the time and my tools were packed already. It can be done in 2-3 hrs, really just dropping the pan and filter, swapping solenoids, and putting it all back together and filling the xmsn again).

parts were around 400, labor was around 250-300. i paid a 100 deductable with my 3rd party warranty and they picked up the rest after I spoke to numerous supervisors and explained in detail what they had no idea about how the xmsn works and how the code tells you that you dont need a new xmsn, etc etc."

This thread https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...s-for-second-gen-4-liter-trucks.289913/page-4 and @gearcruncher are incredible. An outstanding resource. If you have a CEL light, I would get it tested to help identify if a solenoid is going bad. Through the code on the UG, it helped me narrow down exactly what I needed to do.

EDIT: this thread caught my eye because mine is a 2011 also

Same here have 2011 4.0l 5 speed auto and recently it’s been shifting hard when accelerating. Fluid was changed about 10k mikes ago with lubeguard. MAF and throttle body are clean along with new spark plugs. I’m not getting any error codes yet but wondering what I should look into to nip this in the bud before it gets worse? Should I look at turning up the screw 1/4 turn on the SLU solenoid? I’m also looking at the ratiotek shift kit but any recommendations if I should get the standard kit or HD kit- I am not forced induction. But do tow a 20ft pontoon boat from time to time, also running on 33” tires on stock gears.
