What Have You Done To Your 3rd Gen Today?

I think it's too early to tell about rust on the 3rd gen. I can say that the way Toyota handled my 1st gen and 2nd gen frame issues is why I had the confidence to buy the 3rd gen. My 2000 Tacoma Prerunner and my 2008 Tacoma Prerunner are both going strong with new owners and frames covered and fixed under the recall. The 2000 had a new frame installed. The 2008 was stripped of undercoating, inspected, treated and undecoated. All done free by Toyota. I have no concerns about the 2016. One thing is that both the 2000 and 2008 were made in Japan. Only 4 or 5 years ago there were Tacomas shipped from Japan that required the entire drum to drum rear ends replaced due to rust issues. Brakes were covered in rust and inoperable when they arrived at US ports.

 

The headliner material on the 3rd gen is different from the second gen. I had over 60 patches on my ‘14. Here’s my small collection on the ‘17. Some patches don’t work.

I’m right there with you. When I saw this pic posted for the first time, that is basically the same thing I said. I haven’t gotten into the patches myself. I see why people do it and some are really cool. I just can’t get over the look of them being all over a nice and clean ceiling. I personally can see one or two, but there are some that have the whole thing covered. If I were to get one tho, I truly think I’d get this one for sure.

 

Just means that you don't have to park in the outer regions of parking lots anymore, away from the evil shopping carts and careless door openers.

I figure there are stages of resignation (like stages of grieving) that your vehicle is just a "thing", and like all things degrades over time.

The first stage is the first door ding. Another stage is when you look underneath and everything isn't clean and shiny anymore. One of the later stages is when you notice rust poking through the paint from the other side of the body panel, or maybe when you find that necessary repairs are becoming a nearly weekly event.

Check a body shop for paintless dent repairs. You might get lucky. I have seen some nasty looking dents pop right out with that method. Does not hurt to ask.

 

The metal is treated prior to assembly. That is why manufacturers provide corrosion warranties on new cars. That doesn't mean that exposed nuts and bolts will always be rust free. The same goes for welded joints. You weld steel parts together with steel weld wire which is then painted. It is always a good idea to spot check and no harm in applying undercoating from a can. Back in the 1970's I made good side money at a Ford dealer spraying undercoating on cars. Back then it was a $150 option. I always told people just drop by Saturday and I would do it for $50. It was basically a paint booth with a lift. I don't think any dealers offer that now. But metal treatment is so much better now.

 

Yeah I have a pdr gut that I think can do it. He took out a nasty dent in a crease on my '15 Tacoma.

 

When deciding if I wanted any additional rustproofing applied, I first read through Toyota's corrosion warranty. Basically. it says that if you take the vehicle out of your garage you've voided your warranty (it actually says that exposure to salt water, like if you live near an ocean or live in an area where road salt is used, voids the warranty).

The road salt is downright nasty around here. After a bit of research, I decided to go with an annual application of Fluid Film in the fall. I'll be having a first application done, hopefully, next week then every October after that. Not for everyone, but I think it will give me some peace of mind. Fluid Film is similar to soaking your entire under carriage and inner body panels in motor oil, but a little more environmentally friendly.

 

I read that as PBR Gut and wondered what that had to do with anything.

 

On that subject we were looking at 1 year old suv's for my wife years ago. We got as many carfax reports as we could to avoid the "rust state" vehicles. We looked at a Highlander with 7000 miles on it. That local Toyota dealer was not one that posted free carfax reports. Body, paint and interior looked like new. During the drive the salesman said he thinks it came from Richmond VA which was ok. Drove it around, pulled back in the lot and told the salesman I wanted 2 things. First I want to see a carfax and second I want the truck on a lift so I can inspect it. He came out quickly and said I was not allowed access to a lift. He then scurried back in to get the carfax printed. I crawled under the truck and it looked like it had been submerged in salt water for 3 years. Everything, and I mean everything was coated in surface rust. I opened the hood and rust was starting everywhere. My mind was made up by then. He came out with a carfax from upper New York state. Finally found a better deal from a local one owner. I still cannot believe that Toyota had so much rust starting on a 1 year old truck.
