I had the same issue, but I figured that I’d take the chance and get into an argument later if they refused to update it

Time of acceleration you may feel like it’s a dead pedal where you cant pass people. Overall a better driving experience.

If you think it’s BS, no one is making you to go out and get it. Enjoy your truck if you think it’s fine.

There's no way to know if they've applied the new cal to the 2019s prior to delivery until someone has one. Its not even that big of a deal. If you find a deal on a 2018 just tell them to update it or you wont purchase the truck.

Good question, would be great info to know and something to throw at dealerships if they try refusing.

Yes, as stated on the T-SB itself, the service is covered by the 80,000 mile warranty.

Just had mine done for a 2018 trd sport 4wd, TSB 0062-18 and the shifting is definitely an improvement. I told them the symptoms, and the technician was able to replicate the symptoms and did the update. Dropped truck off at 7:30am, and got the car back at 1. Mileage in was 6579, and mileage out was 6592.

    My 2 cents
I have a 2018 Tacoma TRD Offroad 4wd Dblcab -- I took my truck in this morning and the service writer checked me in and said this was a known issue. What issue? Same as everyone else has described above- transmission shift points are very early, trying to keep the engine rpm's at 1,000; the feel when driving is like its shifting from 1 to 3 to 6 (there is not a slip or skip feeling), also when driving on the ramp to the interstate the truck will shift from 4-6 leaving you at 1,000-1,100 rpms and no acceleration, so you have to push the gas pedal down and then it goes from one extreme of 1,100 rpms to 5,500 :annoyed:! Total difference from my son's 2002 Tacoma with the 3.4l 4 speed w/ overdrive.
Now back to this morning...so I'm left with the service writer driving off with my keys and my son and I drinking :pccoffee:. Just hanging out, and sipping coffee. I never saw my truck enter the shop, and 1.5 hours later here comes the mechanic pulling up in the service writer exit lane. I walked over and we started talking (I'm still in a good mood you see, although I'm sitting at Toyota for an hour & a half and my guys are on the clock). Then the mechanic says there's no issue with the truck, it drives just like Toyota designed it, and then it started. I told him about the TSB's (and I was prepared with one in hand, just in case), he said that TSB is for high altitudes only and I needed to realize that this truck drives as designed. Then he continues to lecture me as to how this truck is a 3.5L 6 speed and not the 4.0L 5 speed; and I should get used to the way it drives and went on to tell me about a Lexus 8 speed. Say what? Then he walked off. BTW...I've never been in or driven a 2nd gen, so this reference to a 4.0L means nothing to me.

I give the service writer credit, he went back out there and discussed the (3) TSB's with the mechanic (which turns out is the foreman, LOL) and the two come back in and try to warn me into not doing the ECM flash. A long story short, the foreman says, well I'll do it if you just want me to but it's on you . This mechanic was a total turd about a Toyota issued TSB. I said do it, because it can't drive any worse than now. Now I'm 2+ hours into this, and he acts like a 2-year-old and flies off driving like a fish-eyed-fool to the 1st shop bay. 20 minutes later he test drives it, and comes inside to say...well it really did change the shift pattern. And he turned his attitude around then began to tell me how he understands what I'm going for and such.

I hope your experience with the Toyota dealership is better than mine. Results, the transmission is shifting normally without early shifts, no park to reverse or drive jerks, smoother shifts, truck responds with less gas pedal, and the transmission seems to be using all 6 speeds normally now. The truck is driving more like my sons 1st gen.

The service writer said Toyota (like all auto-manufacturers) is trying to meet strict fuel economy and emissions requirements. Also look for a Tundra with a Toyota diesel in 2021.

    Good luck :oldglory:

One thing I noticed after the TSB update, my MPGs went down to 2MPGs.

Before the TSB update, I drove with ECT mode on the freeway going to work and I was averaging around 16.5MPGs with 285s and 2.5” lift.

I drove this morning to work with no ECT Mode on and I was averaging around 14.6. I thought my gas mileage was supposed to get better?

I got this update done on 08-18-18 along with 10k maintenance, walk right in told the service guy about the problem, show him the TSB Bulletin, he's like ok let's make sure we have the right codes & will take care of it today!! I drop my truck off at 9:15am Got it by 3pm..

I don’t understand the unwillingness to apply the update! Is it Toyota is afraid to admit there is a potential problem and thus leave themselves open to a class action suit? Every site is plastered with this problem.

I can’t believe that some of these dealers are that stupid or lazy and not want to do it, when you have presented them the evidence in black and white. They carry on like there isn’t an issue and or an update.

Seems to me you would want the customer happy, then to sour you by insulting your intelligence and claim either no problem or the psych doesn’t apply?
