Throttle body cleaning?

To eliminate the idle shaking the Toyota dealer suggested we do a Throttle body cleaning. Is this something I can tackle myself? If so, can somebody please give me a procedure for doing this and the items I need for this. The vehicle is a 1996 Toyota Tacoma 2.4L 2WD. Thank you.

 

This seems to be the standard service rep answer for everything. I don't think I've been to the dealer yet when they didn't suggest a throttle body cleaning. I am assuming therefore that this is a ridiculously expensive but extremely simple task to undertake. Must be the first service they teach them to "sell".

Has anyone found that after cleaning their throttle body, the idle is a bit high? Cleaned it yesterday, let it sit with the air intake off for about 15 minutes when done, Fired it up so it would for sure start again on Monday morning. Drove 12 miles to work, parked, put car in neutral, idle is sitting at about 1000rpm. Usually idles in the 600-750 range.

2001 2.7l I4 Manual Transmission.

does it just need a few driving sessions to work itself out?

Just go to a auto parts store and get a bottle of Techron Concentrate Fuel injection cleaner. Put it in with 12 gallons of gas and it will not only clean your entire fuel system, but will help remove carbon deposits from the top of the pistons. If a severe case do it twice. $7 a jug and many times AAP and O'Reillys run this as a BOGO item. Try to do this near the end of a oil change interval as the krap Techron removes, some of it makes it to the oil.

I pulled the neg terminal on the battery for about 4 hours. Put it back on and now that the computer reset i'm running at the right RPM.

I've heard of the Techron, a friend swears by it. I'll try it soon because I need some gas and an oil change is near.

That's what I always do B4 every oil change - does that mean I Don't have to do a throttle body cleaning at all ? I have 100,000 on the truck. Thanks.

 

Clean your throttle body. Fuel system cleaner doesn't touch the throttle body.

 

There is a sticky thread at the top of the 4cyl page with easy instructions to clean the throttle body, and yes, it's a good idea to do it every once in a while. Just cleaned mine this morning as a matter of fact. Idle is a bit more smooth now.

anyone actually notice a difference after doing this? whats the reasoning? sounds like most people seem to create problems by cleaning.

 

maybe the easiest/safest way would be using a rag or microfiber towel spray it with cleaner and wipe out the inside of the intake throttle bottle instead of spraying cleaner directly into it, doing the later seems to screw up the idle for a lot of people. I never really seen an improvement in doing it but getting the soot buildup out and from around the butterfly keeps it from binding or sticking for maybe better throttle response.

 

I had a smoother idle after cleaning my throttle body and MAF, but it only lasted 1-200 miles until the ECU relearned itself. My idle is rough when the AC compressor is engaged. If I turn off the AC, the idle smoothes out.

 

I just did the Seafoam treatment to my throttle body. I'm also on the second treatment of Amsoil PI. The engine does run a lot smoother and there seems to be much more "pick-up" but the idle was only smooth for about a day. From what I have read and from what a friend of mine who was a Toyota mechanic tells me? The 2.7 is just is what it is once it gets miles on it. They idle and vibrate at the same time. Some do and some don't. I'm at the point that if it runs smooth, gets good mileage and gets me where I want to go I'm not going to worry about a slightly rough idle. Many posts and pages on this forum have been dedicated to this problem with the 2.7 and I've come to realize that it's just the way they are. That's why Toyota added the dual balance shafts to the 2.7 I would guess. Until I get a code I won't worry about it but I still think I'll buy an IAC valve to have on hand when the code pops up. Then there is the myriad of vacuum hoses on these newer vehicles to check. Let alone the various valves.

 

Cleaned the Throttle Body on my dad's Camry 2.4. The idle was low and rough before. Cleaned it out with CRC Throttle Body cleaner and a rag. Idle was high afterwards. I simply disconnected the battery for 10 min and it was back to normal after that. I read that the Idle becomes high because there is now increased air flow after cleaning and the engine adds more fuel to compensate for increased air.

 

well that doesnt clean the throtle body how would it?
