This was my second set of keys for the 2017 Tacoma I no longer have. They were locked in a safe box since day one so it's condition is flawless. The trunk key has already been cut and the FOB already programmed, but you can reprogram the fob and have a new key cut or use a pre-existing key and use this FOB as a replacement.

I have a question. Are you able to reprogram this key fob on your own? Or do you have to bring it to a dealership to do so? I remember doing my own reprogramming on the 4th gen 4Runner.

Not sure to be honest. It definitely can be reprogrammed, but doing so is not my expertise.

That's the only problem, the dealer may charge an arm and a leg for reprogram. I wonder if they also sell a blank key to attach to that fob as well? At least someone else can get it cut.

I just called the dealership because I was curious myself, and of course YMMV, but my dealership said they just charge for 1 hour labor to program it.

And heres a link to an uncut key on ebay...

What was their quote? I just called my dealership as well and they quote me $140:eek:, if they can get it to work, otherwise the price may go up or no change if it doesn't work. I hate stealerships...

oh, and their system don't show a spear blank key either. They will call the warehouse and see if they sell them or not.

$134 here. It WILL work if they re-program since I think these keys can fit something like 5 different vehicles on them and this one only has one. But yea, dealerships are hard bud.

FWIW, I required a third key with my vehicle purchase and it cost them (billable) ~$400. That was parts/labor. I can look later and see the price breakout, but the FOB itself was an off the shelf thing they had in stock in parts. They just had to add the code to the vehicle. The key, is laser cut and they had to send out for that. It came FedEx the next day from a place in Michigan using the key-code (that number on the little tag they gave you with your keys). So, this is a deal if you want another key. You will need someone with TechStream access to program. There may be a secondary "add a key" method, but I haven't researched it. Usually, it involves a series of on/off and then punching lock on each remote to be added to the system. I doubt it exists for this system, since it also starts the car and not just unlock the doors, like older remotes.

    EDIT: Helpful stuff....

These OEM Fobs on ebay go for around $90 for uncut key. Dealer said programming is just an hour of labor charge. So if someone just needs a replacement fob or knows how to get a newly cut key, they can use this fob for roughly 50% off buying new from the dealer.

Can a FOB already programmed to one vehicle be reprogrammed to another through Techstream without doing anything like clearing all codes or anything funky like that? Youtube videos seem easy enough, but they are using new (virgin) keyfobs. I read somewhere you need to clear a seed value or something like that.

I am interested but I can’t find how to program a previously programmed remote. I looked at Victory’s post but still couldn’t find it. I have the techstream but needed verification it can be done without going to a locksmith or dealer.
