I have looked online at the Hitch Safe and the Hitch Vault and have chosen and I just ordered the Hitch Vault. My reasoning:
I will be using my truck mostly in ski country and both systems have a potential to freeze up in winter.

-I saw a short video of a guy whose latch on the Hitch Safe would move but the locking mechanism not release, so the system is a little too mechanical for my needs and might be very difficult to access if it malfunctions and the safe destroyed in the process.

-If the locking pin malfunctions on the Hitch Vault, then I can get a grinder to gain access and then just buy a new pin. Yes a thief could have a grinder and gain access but it just doesn't seem all that likely to happen (bigger chance of me forgetting the combination. lol) Also if the thief is a young buck, then once he gains access to the cab he will then discover that it is a M/T and he probably doesn't know how to drive one!!.

On my 2nd gen I drilled two holes in the top of the side cubby pocket and zip tied the valet key to the outside. If I needed it I could pop out the cubby and get it, and no one would ever find it otherwise. Haven't figured out a spot on the 3rd gen yet, but I'm working on it.

The idea came after my brother-in-law gave his keys to my 2yo nephew inside while he gassed up.. Haha..

If you really want to keep it hidden and always have access, stash it in your prison wallet

For those of us with just a plain key, I took a long wine bottle cork and jammed the metal part of the key into it. I tied it up above the spare with a piece of wire using several loops so it wont fall off.

Have you considered making a Hidden Vault Hitch, where you have an actual functional ball hitch with the Hidden Vault part in the cavity?

That would serve both purposes for those that actually tow, and would actually be hidden.

Ball Hitch Vault is a brilliant idea. This is the best post on the thread because it is the perfect stealth hiding spot. Anyone looking at the lock will think it is there to prevent theft of the ball hitch, not realizing that it actually hides and secures from theft a more valuable key or credit card.

I purchased the Hitch vault from Amazon. Unfortunately it does not work due to the width of our hitches. Was asking about cleaning up the outer piece of metal, but was advised against it. I have the panel mount metal locking cubby. Might have to stash key in there, but doesn’t help if you lose or break the clicker. We’ll see

I clicked on the Amazon link above and the page had dozens of Tacoma accessories, including the HitchSafe, but not the HitchVault which AFAIK is only available direct from the manufacturer in Edmonton Alberta.

BTW, from what I have read, for the HitchSafe to fit a Tacoma hitch receiver it needs longer attachment pins.

Just an update if anyone is wanting one of the Amazon Hitch safes. They sell the pins separately for Toyota vehicles. I ordered a set yesterday so that I could use mine.

For your 2017, install the version of TS linked in the 1st Post:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/software-update-for-the-manual.562550/

From there, I'm told that all you need is the programming antenna:
    https://www.amazon.com/ICARSCAN-Programmer-Vehicle-Keymaker-Programming/dp/B01FSDI8F2

I have TS installed but not need to try key programming yet. It worked great for the ECU update though.
