I looked into doing this type of setup, but was struggling trying to figure out all of the required pieces and arms. Even then I didn't like how far out most setups ended up.

I ended up with a phone mount that has a rubber mount that goes and squeezes the vent flap in between. This I have simply squeezed on my tech deck, and it does not move at all. Way more simple, and compact.

Having gone from the windshield suction cup mount, to the vent mount, to this. I absolutely love this already. With the short ram arm and this adapter to be able to use these generic phone holders it's about steering wheel level as far as how close it is to me. I did have it set a little too close to the steering wheel and hit my phone with my fingers earlier today while turning, but I adjusted it more towards the passenger side and it's good to go now.

Not while driving in many states. It could get expensive depending on how often you are stopped.

I think the A pillar ram ball is the best bang for the buck. 100% solid mechanical mount that is 100% "return to stock", and meets with the legal requirements of all states. I've got the Bird Dawg mirror riser/ram ball combo. I get that having the phone hanging below the rearview mirror seems obtrusive, but i've had my phone there on a half dozen vehicles for a decade (road warrior - GPS is omnipresent) and it's simply not an issue.

Agree with this though....as radios all gain GPS function, and your phone/music function is also handled hands free. None of us should have a phone out. Simply no need.

My next 'investment' will be a head unit, making this a non issue.

The tecdeck holds a vent mount very well.

Mind posting a pic? I was looking at these a while ago but hesitated on buying.

I have a 3d printer at work. So I'm only in for the hardware and the filament. I designed the phone clip in Fusion360 to fit my phone/case, but the rest was on Thingiverse. These are printed in ABS since it gets so hot in this black truck here in Texas. Thoughts?

Nice work! what would be nice/novel and justify basically pirating an idea...is if the ball mount were made in gray, and incorporated the cover that we have to remove to access the mounting hole. THAT would be original, and totally be Taco specific.

Thanks! This is a proof of concept right now and once I get all the adjustments made, then I'll get some gray ABS and see how close of a match it is for one good final print.

I don't know if re-inventing the wheel is accurate. I've been looking for a solution to get my phone out of the console for a while now and found this thread. I like it so far. I have a Carplay stereo, so I'll need to pull a cable over to there, but I don't mind that, as I don't like the current way it's run. I'm going to be redoing some of the switches over there soon anyway, so I'll do it all at the same time. Also, I wanted to learn how to print ABS, so this was a good exercise, that stuff is tricky.

Totally understand. I'm new to the whole 3d printer thing, so I get it.

I second the iOttie, I use it everyday and love it. Lots of positions and fairly stable.

What's the purpose of an automatic trans if you're not going to use your free hand for stuff. :D

I'd never put a suction clamp on the windshield. In hot climates, it will pull the layers of glass apart, leaving a circular crack. Might take a few yrs in the sun but I've seen it quite a lot.
