I did mine and watched that video. It's a pain but I'm sure I saved a few hundred dollars doing it myself. Just make sure you plug all the vacuum lines back in and when you get the part it should have a flat metallic type gasket for the metal pipe. They gave me an oring that was for the factory plastic pipe and I had to go back to the dealer to get the right one.

@toyodajeff thanks for the tip, I called a local dealership and they quoted me $375 - $420 in labor + about $55 for pipe and gasket. If I give myself enough time, I think I can do it myself and with the money I save could be spent on tools. I hate to pay someone to do something that's within my ability, it's just knowing when something is better to pay to have performed.

I like to be proactive maintenance wise and would rather do this early, rather than being under the gun if the coolant bypass starts weeping or worse yet gives way while traveling, then possibly overheating it.

Just curious, did you have to replace any other gaskets other than for the coolant bypass pipe, like the throttle body gasket or intake manifold gasket?

Yep on mine, I replaced the throttle body gasket and intake manifold gasket. It may not be necessary but I did it so I knew it was right when I out it back together. I think all the parts were less than $100

You could do it with a 3/8 socket set, 1/4 socket set and metric wrench set. Maybe a pair of needle nose to.
I also sprayed out my throttle body because it had alot of gunk and completely drained the antifreeze out of the block and put 2-3 brand new gallons back in since i was taking the pipe off.

Hey bud, sorry to reopen this thread but I’ll be tackling this on my Toyota this weekend. I have all parts, just wondering if you used any sort of sealant on the water pipe gasket? Thanks

I dont think I did, it's been a while since i did that, but i think it's a metal gasket and when you torque the pipe down it collapses the gasket.
And the intake gasket has some kind of spongy rubber type stuff made into it.
And you need the metal gasket not a o ring. The dealer will probably try to give you a o ring

Make sure you have the right metal gasket and no I didn't put any sealant on it. It's been a year-ish and I've kept a close eye on it and not a drop has seeped out, the metal gasket is legit.

Thanks all, I appreciate it. Mines just started weeping but rather get it out the way asap and not have to worry about it again

like everyone stated, no sealant. Also be sure to get that tough son-of-a-gun vacuum hose towards the rear of the intake manifold in securely, people tend to forget it on reassembly or don't secure it properly causing a vacuum leak/idle issue.

While you're down there and depending on your mileage, may be a good idea to knock out the thermostat since it is relatively inexpensive and you'll have plenty of room to do it. I did mine at the same time. I actually have a new stant oem temp thermostat for the 2.7L that I can send to you for free if you'd like, just pm me and I'll ship it off tomorrow, you'll need a new gasket for the housing and thermostat though.

Cheers for the info and offer bud, I’m actually over in Australia, my utility is actually branded as the Toyota hilux. I could not find any info whatsoever over here, I’m glad you all are so knowledgeable with the Tacoma otherwise I’d be in some trouble lol. There’s a few small things different like the air intake but the part number and parts I got from the dealer here for mine were exactly the same.
