@m603holden figure out your config issue? I had a problem with winlink, only outputting 5w. Check setting 16-10 and 16-14. My DATA DATA GAIN was too low.

Yeah I've got movement on my alc. So I know it's getting to the radio.

Haven't had time to hop on and really play. All this is based on not getting a response from the heartbeat call I might add.

I'm about to start putting my build together (parts in the mail).
How did you measure/mark your holes on the ammo can for mounting?
Also, how did you get multiple wires in/out from your battery with the QDs? Do you just crimp 2 or 3 wires into the terminal?

    Great to meet you!

I've got the ram ball mounts on the expedition essentials tpam. Works alright. I still need to come up with a better mounting solution for my FT-891

I played around with the layout for a while, then when I hat it, I marked and then made a paper guide on the inside and moved it to the outside and drilled. I suggest a new drill bit and very small file (HF has a jeweler's file set for like $5).

I did one wire to the battery and then used the WAGO connectors to split it off to everyplace I needed it to go. I LOVE the WAGO connectors. I either solder or WAGO now.

Smart about the paper guide, was planning on new drill bits anyway. In your write-up you mentioned WAGO connectors and I didn't understand what they were for so thanks.

I've been thinking through a hammo can build for almost a year now, and you're the first person I've found that has said anything more about their build than "look at this cool thing".

SUPER helpful! Can't wait to post my pics.

I think I need to add an HF antenna to my airplane. I spoke to some people at a fly-in in Idaho; they said their father used to have a wire on a reel connected to the strut he could unwind and make DX HF contacts on. Is there a problem with the having wire wound on a reel that isn't extended? Seems like it would become a big inductor. Maybe run it through a ferrite bead as soon as it leaves the reel?

I hope these help, pics of WAGO connecters.

also, I used silicon tape, sometimes called magic tape. It’s what car manufacturers use for wiring. It stretches and only sticks to its self (like plastic food wrap). It’s also waterproof, so worth having around the house.

What's considered a reasonable/good range to hit a repeater from an 8watt HT? I was at Uwharrie Soup Bowl (should show up on Google maps) picking up K4ITL repeater 89miles away. Granted they couldn't hear me clearly, I had the radio on 4watt and got bored of the "what's on your toolbelt in the bedroom" talk by old men..

The farthest I've had with 50w is about 50 miles with a strong signal.

    10w I've done about 20 into a repeater.

    It's not so bad
I actually enjoy rtty contests. Not for the contests aspect. Just to see a whole different range of regions light up.

Yep, that's what I figured you were doing. I'd love to get into it but WI isn't known for its crazy elevation.

Maybe I can start LOTA [lakes on the air]
