Here's a quick little project that I've been thinking about forever: transmission tunnel storage pouches.

These two pouches are from Maxpedition. The entire back of them is the hook side of hook and loop. You can see in my install location, half of the pouch attaches to the carpet (it sticks really well!) and the top half attaches to the transmission tunnel plastic. I used industrial strength adhesive backed loop side material. I've used this on interior plastic before and it sticks pretty well if you clean the surface well with alcohol. It can also be peeled off without damage but it takes some effort. The jury is out on whether or not these will work as is. There is a big step in from the carpeted area to the narrower transmission tunnel plastic. It forces the pouch into a sharp S bend. We'll see if that makes it unusable for my purposes. If it's a problem, I'll figure out a solution!

I plan to put a few pens, writing pads, multi tool, knife, Chap stick...stuff like that. I'll load these up over the next few days. Fingers crossed they work as they are!

With the added weight of armor and camper and gear, the stock Tacoma brakes are easily cooked on long/curvy downhills. The braking power is fine but I need more heat capacity. The rear drums may be part of the problem but that's a much more spendy area to address. So, I'm going with 5th gen 4 runner front brakes. Larger rotors and larger pistons. Based on this forum, this combo works well. This also necessitates 17" wheels which I'm bummed about because there are no 17" rims that match the factory Tacoma 16" aluminum wheel specs. The 17" Tacoma sport rims are closest (.5" wider) but i really dont want those rims. The next best option is the 17" steel wheel from 5th gen 4 runners. It's the spare wheel under 4 runners that you never see. They are the right width but have a different offset. I guarantee I'll have rubbing with these which makes me sad. There's just no good option here. Stuff like this is what will make me get a full size truck some day. These mid size trucks are a great size but they are so lightweight.

The wheel. I have 5 of these. I got knockoffs since they were cheap and I could get them quickly. These are from Road Ready Wheels. Hopefully they're well made enough and safe.

    Brakes!

I still have some parts to collect:
    Dust shields
    Center caps
    Lug nuts if necessary
4 Runner hard lines (I guess you can tweak the Tacoma lines to work)
Tires (probably Toyo AT3 in 255/80 size)
TPMS sensors (maybe I'll decide to put my stock sensors in a pressurized tube?)

I'm taking the rims in to get powdercoated soon. I know they are already powdercoated but I don't want black rims.

It'll be a few weeks before this all comes together because powdercoat will take 7-10 days by itself.

Picked up my wheels from the powder coat joint today!

    Cardinal Powder: GR09

I also ordered my tires. It'll be a few weeks before the swap gets done probably. Once wheels and tires are swapped, I'll get the brakes done.
