So you're not on board with the synergies of the new disruptive cloud-first paradigm?

Me neither  Its a house of cards.

I literally said 3 years ago when they started down this path:

"Your choices are cheap, fast, and secure, and you can only pick two. Going to a cloud provider takes security off the table, so for your sake I hope it's cheap because you'll pay through the ass on your first breach."

We already own world-class facilities that have EVERYTHING we need to be our own provider. We already are. We have saved ZERO dollars by going to cloud services.

This is something I've never understood about companies that have their own, well established infrastructure. They have this notion that once things are put in the cloud costs, deployment time and all the ailes them are magically no longer a problem. Often times however, there is no thought put into design, growth, security etc and they end up with an poorly functioning cloud eco-system and have to fall back to their on-prem infrastructure because the monthly costs have ballooned our of control and they have nothing to show for it.

That's why you should always have your servers use UTC! Also stick with ISO8601 timestamps!

Oh, if it were up to me, I would.

    But I'm dealing with customers.

And not just any customers, but railroads.

That's odd. I would expect that a company that has assets in multiple time zones would embrace UTC.

Doesn’t everyone just establish an NTP and ignore it?

It depends. Some of them run north south, some just set everything the same. Some utc.

Being a supplier, I have to support all the options.

More and more. For a long time, most things in the field were not networked though.

I have two hard drives from an old computer hanging out of the open case of a third, waiting for an eventual replacement.

    What's your question?

I did this last year with a windows pc. It booted once perfectly fine, then restarted and I never got it to run again. I still don't know exactly why, but I suspect TPM shenanigans.

Whatever you do, backup your data first.
