I dont see any reason why you can't safely do that.

Use wire with at least the ampacity of the fuse feeding the original cigarette lighter.
(IE, Cigarette lighter is on 10 amp fuse, use some 14 gauge wire...)

Just have to limit total current on the front cig lighter + new back accessories to less than the original cig fuse.

Thx, that's what I thought. The freezer pull 2.7A on eco mode, have to see what it is on full. Guess I should make sure it's not over 10A before I start this.

It wont be. (Bet it will negligibly more amps)
    ...
Just dont plug in your inverter or 12v tire pump or something like that at the same time.

BTW, those devices 'require' a D-shape hole to install so they wont turn... to do it 'right' be ready for some careful use of a dremel tool, etc.... or just throw it in a circular hole with a dab of glue, will probably be fine to stop rotations.

Thx, the freezer plus a 2.1A cell phone should be good. Great advice since I want it to look good being a new vehicle.

I am not great with wiring so forgive me, but what would I need to do (or rather, not do) if I just wanted to add an outlet to the cab and didn't need the 400W anytime mod?

If you want another usb or cig outlet just tap off those. If you want to run something with an AC two prong household 110v plug, tap into the wires after the converter. You'll be limited to 100W with the truck in drive, if you do the mod as well it'll run 400W with the truck in drive.

On the original post, skip steps 8, 9, & 10. On step 11 ground the ac outlet as shown. Do step 12 as normal.

Got mine completed today, works great! Glad to have it now, I was tired of running a 6ft cable from teh dash to the back seat to charge the ipad the kiddo watches on our hour commute three times a week.

Not finished in this pic, but you get the idea.

Nice gear there. Probably the best surface mount I’ve seen so far.

Man this is a really cool mod! Wish I was a little more confident in my wiring abilities. Just outta curiosity why does it switch from 400w to 100w while driving in the first place?

Toyota is generally conservative. There will be more loads on the system when driving. Where when idling, it would most likely be just the outlet? That's my guess anyway.

Love it! Might do this soon! Why didn't I think of this earlier? How much did this cost?

I like the aesthetics of the desktop grommets folks have used but three things about them bother me:

    1) It seems the inverter would need to be on to use the usb ports. Not a huge deal but ideally that shouldn’t be necessary as usb is dc.

    2) The usb ports are rather inefficient by double conversion (DC -> AC -> DC).

    3) The usb ports would use up some of the 400 watts of the inverter unnecessarily. Leaving less wattage on the table for devices requiring AC.

It seems like having separate plugs for AC and USB would be much better. The usb could be tapped into a 12v source with a fuse and separate of the inverter. Then the full 400 watts of the inverter is available to the AC plug and only needs to be turned on when used.

Am I missing something or does this seem the better way to go?
