This thread now under new management! :D

Participants! Plan to be at The Big Texan no later than 12 pm on Saturday so we can get seated. We'll get the challengers up as soon as we can.

Ask for the Tacoma group table set up by Bryan. See you there!

    -----------------------------------------------------------

New poll is up. PLEASE SEE THIS POST BEFORE VOTING!!!

    Post # 128 is here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/big-texan-tw-pilgrimage.694857/page-7#post-24965044

The rest of the OP is saved below for posterity:

Given our collective interest in meeting up, eating steak and watching others eat steak - we're organizing a trip.

Following in the footsteps of @Breakfast_taCOs we will gather to break bread around the elevated table, before the grills and legendary BBQ Chefs such as Tiny Dancer and The Sheriff.

    Motel on site: https://www.bigtexan.com/motel-homepage/

The camping option near is scenic, and 30 minutes away. We can get a group camp site for $250/night. https://palodurocanyon.com/

We need to agree on a date.

In. There is only one nearby campground (not counting the shitty RV parks)- Palo Duro SP. It's worth the 30 minute drive.

It also fills fast, so if we can get at least 10 to commit by a certain date it would be worth booking the group loop at 250 per night.

I'm not sure why I put July or August honestly.

So speaking from experience, the canyon floor (ie where the campgrounds are) is usually about five to ten degrees cooler at night than the city.

March through early April is going to be a crapshoot. Usually it's warm and pleasant, sometimes it can drop down to low 40's to high 30's. The same can be said for between Halloween and Thanksgiving. December-Feb can be miserable. Years ago the temp dropped to single digits and froze our beer.

April-June is the high season. Beautiful weather, and everyone in texas knows it. The park will be crowded from April to September. Forget about July and August, unless you can sleep with soupy balls.

Honestly, I'm flexible. I'm only 5 hours away, my camper has AC and heating. I'm ready to go any time.

Sometimes it's disappointing to wake up on day 1 of 2 and see your buddies tossing their shit in the trunk because they can't hack the weather though.

    Great information.

I've always wanted to go to the canyon, but I'm 10 hours away and don't have a lot (any) camping gear.

This sounds like a great excuse to get some.

    YES! I'm in.

In the live stream thread, I proposed turning it in to a TW-wide fundraiser. I'm still in for that as well.

Highly recommended. Gratuitous photo bomb incoming!

This would be a good excuse to come see it for a couple of nights. Also, they do have cute little 1930's CCC cabins for the non campers. (last picture). Way better than any hotel.

I voted, but not until next year late. Amarillo in the summer sounds awful and with Covid being a thing, who knows if Mar we will be allowed interstate travel or such.

I'm in Ohio and really want to do this though.

We have a reservation for Christmas weekend, and now I'm starting to get worried it may have been a mistake with your last post about timeframe for going. Still looks awesome though

Nah. Watch the weather, bring a good cot/air mattress to stay off the ground, and a lot of extra blankets. (or look into the CCC cabins and see if they're booked up).

I actually like it in the wintertime. The nights stay cold which keeps the crowds away, but the days usually warm up enough to make for some very enjoyable hikes.
