Hi, I have a ‘20 TRD off-road access cab w/technology package. I’m interested in installing a remote tailgate lock, after calling Toyota they said the lock kit comes with a harness that has to be routed length of the truck to the power source. I heard new Tacoma’s come with a plug ready in the gate for this accessory? Anyone deal with this? I’d appreciate any input.Thanks.

Nope you will need to route from passenger front kick panel to the tailgate. The instructions are very good and clear and its all plug and play. The bed lights are already pre-wired for 2020 and later

Yes, lots of zip ties but it is plug and play. You’ll need to remove the passenger side kick panel and sill plate as well as the tailgate inside cover.

Just got a quote for this from the Toyota dealer I purchased my 2021 TRD OR from. My street is on a 22% grade, and I very much don't want to be crawling around under the truck, even with it chocked and the front tires curbed. Having the dealer do it.

    $169.95 Part
    $195.00 Labor
    $14.45 Tax
    $382.40 Total

With the truck on a lift, I'd say an hour or a bit more would do it. Put mine on sitting in the drive in less than 2 hours. There's not much to it.

Hard top camper...many more to add+
Money ..if you got it ...the price is reasonable...ain’t got money ...sounds pricey...lol
Sometimes it pays to have someone else do the work...if it goes wrong ...they have to correct it ( always go to legit companies)..
    Just my thoughts...
    Aloha,

As others said time vs money if you have an hour its an easy install. If you don't want to deal with it shell out the cash

90 minutes for me to install in my garage. It took almost
more time to figure out how to get the instructions onto my tablet!

No lift for me, just a creeper and a magnetic light.

The grommet needed to run up into he cab was the only thing that temporarily stumped me. I was initially looking at he wrong one (already in use)

I’m planning to do this soon. I’ve been looking at the instructions and it doesn’t look that bad. I don’t mind pulling stuff apart. I figure I learn more about the truck that way. Finding time to do it, though, is the hard part. So I can understand folks paying to have it installed at the dealership.

Seems to be the most common mistake. The one that is used just seems to be to far back for the install but other then that its one of the easiest accessories to install

I installed mine today and it took about 1 1/2 hours. No lift, no creeper (would have been nice), and I also had an issue finding right grommet to use. Overall, it was pretty easy to get done.

I'm thinking about getting a camper shell with an automatic lock on it. Anyone running one similar with this tailgate lock as well? Shouldn't be an issue right?

There are a lot of gate openers you can choose from, and I suggest you go with the one that you like the most and is not that expensive if you are on a budget. The only thing I think you should not do is try and install it because you can damage your car by accident when doing so. I think you should just call a company like everlastgates.com and let them do all that work in just a few minutes. I don't think it will cost you a lot and I surely know that it will cost a lot less than a car repair. I hope I have helped you, and I hope you install that opener successfully.
