I don't have a Tacoma but I do have a 02 Tundra with 173,000 miles. I recently had to replace my trans pan and while I was at it, I replaced the filter. In my opinion, this was a complete waste of time. First, the magnets were clean. There were zero metal shavings. Second, the filter was clean.

I personally wouldn't waste time or money dropping the pan. If you do decide to do it, just get the Toyota FIPG.

Yup, I over torqued. Did realize it until 5 years later when I went to remove the drain plug again. No more torque wrenches for drain plugs for me.

As @gearcruncher recommended I did the pan drop and replaced the strainer, clean the magnets and used the factory gasket. Tightened the pan bolts at about 4 ft/lbs and the drain bolt at 14-15 ft/lbs.

That's true. Are you recommending he replace the solenoids when he drops the pan on his 5 speed?

Well - I was another victim of the over-torqued drain plug from my previous fluid swap.

My second fluid swap is on hold while I get a new pan/bolt delivered.

At least I knew it was a possibility.

There's enough material the trans pan drain can be tapped out to M12x1.25. Use a 27/64 drill. It's what I did with mine and it's not leaking.
The stock trans drain plug is not designed for Toyotas' torque spec.

When I stripped mine, it was only the bolt threads that stripped. Tapped the pan hole, bought a replacement bolt and it's been all good!

I thought about doing this but, elected to go the way I did because I thought there would be less of a chance of stripping it in the future and if I ever sell it, the new owner shouldn't have to worry about it. An M12x1.25 can hold up to more torque than an M10x1.5. I'm sure I'll at least be doing drain and fills in the future. I've found from past experience that once a trans pan been dropped, the filter screen changed, and the pan cleaned out, there's little need to drop it again. Just do the drain and fill.

I actually had read what you did when it happened to me and thought I might have to go that route. Having never used a tap, I was a bit anxious but just took my time and it went well!

In a sense, I'm glad it happened. My filter and magnets were well coated with fine metal goo, so a new filter and a magnet cleaning were definitely needed.

Does anyone have the torque specs on the filter?

Thanks everyone. Finished the pan drop and filter change today along with the full fluid change. I did forget to put in the lubeguard platinum additive, but I figure 12+ quarts of new Maxlife should be ok.
