How can you get an unbiased assessment of what manufacturers use premium filration, such as synthetic fibers or the glass? Been using Hastings and Baldwin for years, might be nice to know what's inside. Thanks. Website doesn't say.

There is a guy on YouTube that has a whole series dedicated to oil filters.
I think it’s Nates Auto or something?

Anyways, he is not the only one to compare filters.
Hours upon hours of oil filter content on YouTube.

The type of media material doesn't matter too much.

The key numbers, for any filter, is the size of the particle that will pass (micron rating) and the capture rating (aka filtration efficiency).
After these key items is the construction, bypass valve, anti-drain back valve, media core, seals.......

Be prepared to jump into a deep rabbit hole.

IMHO, some of the best filters are WIX, NAPA Gold, Bosch and ACDelco.

    Good Luck doing the research.

    Never heard of Hasty Ballsack

    been running OEM filter $5/ea
    90915-YZZD3
works pretty well, the engine runs

    $5 filter + $12 5qt jug synthetic Mobil 1
not really much to complain about

It's a metal canister. Not a Mercedes. It's not a plastic cap housing with removable fleece filter that you can physically look at.

I will admit though. The OE filter is very tiny. It's almost like Toyota didn't give a shit. Same approach they took with certain other things on the truck.
Many other passenger cars, whether metal canister or fleece/paper, have much larger filters.

I’m gonna wager either BS/typo or not actually running synthetic. That’s half of the price when it’s on sale!

during the rebate promotion they've been running for 5+ concurrent years

you would normally buy it for $23-24 at WalMart then provide reciept proof to Mobil who then mails out a $12 check per large jug.
(which is what most people never do)

to each his own, some people like to spend more, their personal business not mine

to be clear, I am not saying I recommend it.
Even if you buy it for $12, in the professional world including rich Porsche racers, it has a reputation for being garbage and watered down. People usually go for higher/anything but, such as Motul, Amsoil, Fuchs, Castrol, Royal Purple, LiquiMoly, Motul, and so on. Which also cost more. Retail on a big jug of Motul has been seen for $44.
Unless however, your goal is to proudly say the word "synthetic" at the next barbeque. Then it is possibly the most affordable way of doing that.

sorry bad angle on the first picture. It’s actually for an oil cooler set up but as for my oil filter I’m using K&n (pure power) reusable oil filter that’s a stainless steel mesh

thanks for the compliment tho :D

    I like it.

Can’t say I’ve ever seen that on a Tacoma before, but I haven’t seen many SC Tacoma’s.
    Just pictures here on TW.
