3rd Gen DIY maintenance quick reference

My 2020 Tacoma Off-Road 4WD took 5 quarts Amsoil squeeze bottles of

$30 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75W-90 in the rear differential. I just got done and had to go out and buy another two squeeze bags (just so I didn't have to go out again). I had purchased 6 initially, but ended up needing 7 total (for front and rear). I made sure to get the last bits in each bags (also pouring any left into the new bag). The front took right around 1.3 quarts. Transfer Case oil, I used the Redline, took approximately 1.2 quarts. This was done for my 30k miles maintenance.

Transfer case, rear/front diff oil looked really good. Very little shavings/sludge on the magnets in the diffs and transfer case looked only slightly darker. I don't wheel often and no towing (just hauling wood and furniture).

Very easy, just hate taking off the metal protectors in the front.

 

Yea it takes 7 quarts. Gotta add that up man! It's all on the front page. Glad it went smoothly for ya! Waiting to get my gears then I'll redo it at 500, then probably one more time at another 500 just to re-check.

Per the front page, the front is 1.6 qts and the max for rear is 4.2 qts. 4.2 + 1.6 = 5.8 qts.

So wait, you are going to switch oil twice after 1000k miles? Good on you. That shit was like like $18 a bag, and I bought 8 bags. You're a better man than me.

I honestly was thinking about doing it for the transfer case too, after reading about 20+ threads on it, the members here (and reps for Redline) made a very convincing argument to go with the MT-LV. I still have like 1.6 qts left of Amsoil, so if I see anything or any problems, I'll just drain and switch it out. Pumping that 1.2 qts was just frustrating. The squeeze bag is definitely the way to go.

 

Oh snap, I was thinking T-case fluid too! Good call! Yea, gonna do it twice but only because I'm swapping to 5.29's. You have to change it 500 miles after the swap, but I'm going to do it twice because I'm an overachiever and it'll help get that break in metal out of there.

 

What was the convincing component?

I looked too a few years ago and…it was typical TW “stick with what’s in the manual” to “use X,Y,Z product “never had a problem” kind of stuff.

Curious if all that got sorted out.

 

I thought there was some uber specific t-case oil that's highly recommended for use?

Redline doesn't make the product in question. It's "genuine Toyota" from what I understand and a dealer only kind of thing

 

Interesting. Same thing as Motorcraft and some FORDs. Can't remember what I used for my 06 F150 but it was the same deal. Then of course, there is 17 types of Mercon lol, but at least some of that can be bought from brands like Castrol and some version Amsoil is good to sub.

 

Redline makes an equivalent or possibly better, MT-LV 70W/75W GL-4 Gear Oil. This thread will go over it, more specifically the response from Redline Rep to a Tacoma World member. It also goes on why not to use a GL-5 in the transfer case further in the thread.

You can also buy the Toyota version on Amazon and a few other places. It's roughly $80 for qt. Comes in a metal can.

 

I'm a little puzzled here. The differentials take 5.8 quarts. As per the first page, the transfer case takes 1.1 quarts. That adds up to 6.9 quarts including the t-case, if you use the same oil in everything(not here to argue about that) I'm just trying to make sure I have enough oil on hand to change all 3(I've got 7 quarts total) before I start wrenching as soon as it warms up outside a tad.

 

Yes, 7 quarts. That said, I'm most likely going to use the Toyota stuff in the T-case.

 

I used two different oils. My rear differential took 5 qts (which I thought was only suppose to be a max of 4.2), my front differential took 1.3 qts. I used AMSOIL for these changes. I bought 6 qts (based off the information on the first page of AMSOIL since I was supposedly only needed 5.8 qts) but it wasn't enough and I ended up buying 2 more qts of AMSOIL because I used 6.3 qts total for the front/rear differential.

I then used 1.2 qts of the Redline MT-LV 70W/75W GL-4 Gear Oil for the Transfer Case.

In total I used 7.5 qts of oil (approximately) for the Rear/Front Differential and Transfer Case (6.3 qts of AMSOIL and 1.2 of Redline MT-LV 70W/75W GL-4 Gear Oil).

 

So either his rear diff is over filled, or the data regarding the amount for the rear diff is wrong.
Data on the first page of this says max 4.2 quarts. He put in 5.

 

Maybe it was thirsty? lol. It's never a bad idea to buy 1 quart extra. Save it for the next time if you don't use it the first.

 

I needed a extra liter. My pump started to leak. I lost like a quarter by the time I was able to unfuck the situation.

 

You can't really overfill them. When it gets to the threads, it starts to leak out and won't stop until it's under the threads. I don't really see how you can overfill it.

Moral of the story, don't buy the exact amount you need, maybe a quart extra. Use it the next time you change the fluids if you don't need it. The transfer case was pretty much spot on.

 

Are you sure it is supposed to be filled to the threads? I've seen axle seals leak from being filled to the fill hole threads - aka over filled.
Not sure what Toyota spec is on the fill level. I will look over the service manual and find out

3) Proper level should be within 5 mm of bottom of fill plug opening
