    So here is the deal,

I took my 2016 Tacoma into the dealer for routine maintenance at 60000 miles. The dealer told me that my timing cover is leaking oil, and the cost to repair is $5,771.07.

This seems comparable to purchasing an entirely new engine. Is this something that an independent mechanic would be able to fix for a cheaper price? How serious is a timing cover oil leak? I've read that it's a serious issue that needs to be addressed immediately, and I 've read that it isn't a serious problem and it's just the dealership trying to make more money off of me.

If anybody can clarify I would appreciate it.

An independent mechanic will almost always be less expensive than a dealer.
Finding one you trust might be a challenge.

The seriousness of the leak depends on how much oil is leaking. If it's just a slow
drip, you have time to plan the repair. If it's "pouring" out of the cover, then you
have to get it fixed ASAP.

I would clean the area the best you can, and keep an eye on the leak. In the mean
time, ask around for a reliable independent mechanic. Bonus points if they're familiar
    with Toyota 3.5 engines.
