Push to start delete.

I am simply looking for any information on how (if possible) to replace my push to start with a key ignition.
I don't care if you think it's stupid. You aren't me. I can't stand the thing and will get it replaced one way or the other. I would just like some ACTUAL help figuring out the best way.
This is a daily driver work truck. I spend a lot of time in this thing (sitting in it as I type) and having to trick the truck to keep power on for stereo and phone calls by putting it into neutral and stopping it is annoying. And it turns the truck off after 30 minutes anyways. I sit here much longer than that. I don't need a truck telling me how to use it.

So, I'll be ripping this thing out and burning it in the desert soon enough.
So, please, if anyone has any useful advise or tips, I would appreciate it.

I'm not selling the truck, getting over it, trading it or anything else. Don't waste your time suggesting it, please.

I mean maybe you can install the key unit from a non push button Tacoma? You would have to rip the assembly out of your truck and figure how to wire up one from a different truck. That sounds dreadful.

I know you don’t want to hear this, but performing this on a brand new $40k vehicle is nuts.

But if I had to have it, I’d start calling up stereo install shops, Toyota experts, trying to find a pro who would do it.

Trade it, despite your mention of time wasting posts.

The button is buried so deeply in the ECU that you can't just swap it without replacing or reprogramming the entire ECU.

So there is no option but to put up with it, trade it, or completely rewire it.

 

Where there is a will, there is a way. But not worth it. Better off trading in on a cheaper Tacoma with a key and upgrading everything else to match the TRD trim.

I have a feeling that even with a physical key, the factory ignition on timeout will still happen.

For some reason, my headlight on warning doesn’t chime on my 23, but it still turns the headlights off after a short bit.

You might want to message someone with an SR and see how long their ignition will stay on with the key before spending any money and time on the project.

Egis makes quite a few options, as do other companies, but in your case, I’d use something like this:

Yeah, it’s not inexpensive, but it could cost about the same or even more to buy an ignition, key, and anything else that’s needed.

I was going to suggest something to the guy, but I realized he's just a petulant child. He's angry because something doesn't work exactly the way he wants it to work, and he ONLY wants suggestions that he agrees with.

 

I have a keyed ignition. So I have some questions.

when you use pts, do you have to press the brake to start?

is there a way to just quick blip the button into acc on mode?

I have had 2 pts vehicles, but both were manual and the clutch had to be pushed in but I feel like I could just push the button and not hold it down for acc on.

 

If you press the start button without pressing the brake pedal, the vehicles goes into ACC mode. If you press the brake pedal and then press the start button, the engine starts running.

Quick press once without brake for accessory, press twice for all electronics on but no-start.

Quick press with brake for start. Alternatively, press and hold for 10 seconds for start. (Useful for passengers you left behind while running into the store.)

To go from engine-on to accessory mode without interrupting the radio, shift to neutral, press the button to kill the engine, then shift to park. (Useful for when your passenger runs into the store and you get left behind instead.)

Good point. Is there a cover that pops off so one could use the actual key provided with the fob? Or is it just place the fob closer to the “ignition area”?

 

It seems to work for everyone else who willingly bought the button and, you know, decided to put up with the thing that they willingly bought.

So, the truck turning itself off after X minutes is implemented in 2020+, it was a quiet addition because it wasn't seen as a big deal. And, for the most part, 99.99% of owners would never notice it.

How did I notice it? I tried to sleep in the cab in the summer. I needed to run the engine for AC, I thought it would be smart to drive through the country and sleep in the cab in the summer in Texas ..... The truck will turn itself off after some pre-determined time. As far as I could figure out, Toyota never said WHEN that time would be, either it's something the truck implements or they just didn't say it. Again, I don't think there's much secrecy in this, but the lack of information released by Toyota is more so "Who would even care". My method - I found a good parking block, on a hill, and put it in neutral with the e brake pulled. Glad I did - dog kicked the transmission into reverse one night O.O

For YOU - switching to a key won't fix that. That programming is DEEEEEP in the ECU, I doubt there's a way to change that. You'd have to get engineers at Toyota involved for that.

Your options are to live with it, or trade it. The manual transmission trucks don't have this auto off feature, and other makes/models don't. But your truck does, and there is NO way to change that. Hard key or wireless key, you're stuck with it.

This post had something about door locking methods that would "disable" the shutoff, but I didn't have luck with that. But hey, worth a shot. Let me know if it works!
