I've run the dust covers for years with my 04, no issues. I've even been over torquing the bolts all this time apparently lol. They've seen tons of trail miles too.

I do change them out as soon as they show any sign of play in the ball joint though

Yeah, I wrote that before all the research was done. I should probably read through in detail and then make an update or two, and link to the research so folks can make the decision for themselves.

Will have to wait a couple weeks since I'm prepping for a trip, but I've made myself a note to look at it when I get back. Thanks for the reminder!

Damn, my bolts are overtorqued too. I know because I did them recently. Gonna grab some new black bolts and reinstall. Where's everyone getting their bolts? Local dealer? Prices are all over the place. Up to $15 per bolt!?!?

Order 04005-03235, it comes with a set of 2 ball joints and is much cheaper than ordering them individually.

For the bolts, 90105-10406 (or 90080-10066) are the earlier shorter bolts for without the protectors, torque spec is 59 ft-lbs), 90119-10933 are the longer bolts to use if keeping the covers (torque spec is 37 ft-lbs). For a brief period in 2001 90105-10505 bolts were also used (shorter) along with 90119-10933. (See subsequent post)

Later vehicles always used 90119-10933 and torqued all bolts to to 37 ft-lbs. These are the bolts I would recommend for all years, torqued properly!

43346-60011 are the covers, if you were so inclined to run with them.

Ahh dang! I ordered individually, but now makes sense why there was only one part# for the LBJ warranty repair years ago.

    Thanks!

that looks like the same kind of company as ToyotaPartsDeal, just a business that has a bunch of dealerships under their scope that they source the best prices on parts from. If they're like TPD, their customer service will likely be bad or non-existent if the order goes wrong or they mess it up, just heads up.

Personally I would just try and find a dealership's online website and go directly through them

Installed these in 2017 with 257,000 miles. I now have 295,000. I saw that grease around the boot on the passenger’s side. Driver’s side is fine though.
I haven’t checked for play yet though. I’ve had mine changed under warranty for that recall.
That part # that Jeff provided for the warranty kit. 04005-03235.
Will that work for any 1st Gen? You just have to buy certain bolts depending on if you use the plastic cover or not right? And it includes both balljoints?
    Thanks!

Part number will work for all 6-lug trucks. The newer longer bolt part number will work with or without the protectors, but only on trucks produced after May 2001 and/or trucks that have had their knuckles replaced with newer ones.

On earlier trucks, the longer bolts may not fully seat into the knuckles as the blind holes may be too shallow without the protector in place. See @Area51Runner's post for alternate options.

You sure on the bolt? My understanding was that the bolt for use with the dust protectors (9011910933), was a little longer to account for the dust protector itself and if used without the dust protector would not fully seat on the holes which did not thread thru the knuckle.

If not using the dust protector then the bolt to use is this one (faired better than the toyota bolt in testing) or if sticking with OEM then the toyota green (90080-10066).

90105-10406 is the bolt Toyota used for the Tacoma from January 1995 until February 2001 (replaced by 90080-10066 as a service part) before the protector was added. All 4 bolts are the same (shorter) length.

Toyota added the protector to the Tacoma's ball joint in February 2001. The protector is only attached with two bolts, and so from February 2001 until May 2001 Toyota used two different length bolts, two shorter bolts, 90105-10505 and two longer bolts, 90119-10933. The longer bolts were used where the protector is, to allow for the same thread engagement into the knuckle.

90119-10933 is the bolt Toyota used for the Tacoma from May 2001 until September 2004, all 4 bolts are the same (longer) length. Toyota decided to just use the longer bolts for all 4 bolts and let the longer bolts go further on the holes without the protector.

If you use them without the protectors, you are just letting them do that for all 4 bolts instead of just the 2 without the protector. If you look at the photos in @Sicyota04's earlier post, you can see that he is using the longer bolts without the protectors.

Having said ALL of that.... it occurs to me that on earlier trucks produced before May 2001, the blind holes may have a shallower depth, thus not allowing the longer bolts to fully seat. So, you're likely correct if that has been reported previously. I will edit my previous posts accordingly.

Yeah, I recall reading it somewhere just don't remember who it was. @eon_blue, was that you? The black w/washer and without the dust protector - did they all snug up correctly @37 ft lbs? May not have been you Ryan as I do remember seeing something where you mentioned you had them way past 37ft lbs initially.
I'm almost tempted to order that recall kit to see what bolts it does include. Looking at the TSB for it and the recall campaign, it does show a torque value of 37ft lbs. but no dust protector. Oh well, one of those file for later confirmation things I guess.

An interesting thing if anyone has a spare LBJ handy... see if it has a date code.

Where can you buy 04005-03235? I’ve tried 4 local Toyota dealerships and Toyota of Colorado Springs. All give me a variation of this

You simply may not be able to order it. It's the LBJ recall campaign service kit part#. It might not be available anymore or could be restricted to Toyota only as Dallas mentioned. Honestly do not know. Try -

It was never a restricted item in the past but that may have changed. There’s a set on eBay right now, along with those other online shops just mentioned.

I sold plenty in my time at Toyota, so it would be sad if you can’t get them anymore.
