High Country Tuning/Overland Torque Tune (OTT). Toyota tuning on the Western Slope and High Country.

Thanks for another great meet up, Grand Junction! Toyota owners are always fun to hang out with. Would love to see these meet ups turn into a larger event for Toyotas on the Western Slope. Let us know if you have any ideas or suggestions.

Here are just a few of the vehicles that showed up on Saturday.

 

It's official! Lexus GX460s are now supported. Staying true to form, OTT put the time and effort into refining everything on the Dyno before releasing the tune to the masses.

Lexus doesn't leave as much to be gained compared to Toyota, but we were able to find some consistent torque and HP increases across the RPM band. Couple that with improved throttle response and optimized shifting, and you end up with a fun GX460!

The High Country Tuning rig got a make over! Finally got to break it in on a trip to Moab. The OTT tune is amazing off road! The extra low-end torque and HP really help to turn oversized tires and compensate for the extra weight.

Just a heads up, if you're using dyno results and claims of performance gains to help you make a decision on which tune or product to purchase for your vehicle, then you should understand what those dyno results mean. A stock 3rd Gen Tacoma will typically put out well over 225 torque and HP. That's actually pretty low for most stock tuned Tacomas. This has been verified time and time again by various tuners, companies, and individuals:

Dynos are finicky, though. It's hard to get the exact same numbers over and over. That being said, the numbers should still be fairly close for each run. things that effect dyno numbers like humidity, elevation (air pressure, oxygen levels), tires, gears, etc. can all be corrected for to get fairly uniform results no matter where you are in the country.

If you're choosing a tune based on someone's claims of performance gains, it's a good idea to check the dyno numbers of the stock tune that they are comparing to. The stock tune numbers should be at least 230-ish torque and HP for a 3rd Gen Tacoma. As you can see, OTT actually compares to a stock Dyno run that is over 240 torque and HP.

If the product or tune that you are interested in is comparing to stock numbers that are closer to 210 torque and HP, then you are being deceived. They are purposefully using lower stock numbers in order to claim larger gains.

Met up with this 2013 Magnuson supercharged Tacoma owner the other day. We updated the Toyota software and conducted several rounds of data logging and making adjustments. It's amazing how big of a difference a good tune can make. Round 1 of data logging compared to the final product is a completely different truck!

BIG NEWS!!!

OTT has gained SEMA-CE Certification for emissions legal calibration in 49 states for our 3.5L Tacoma Calibration! This means that tuning your truck with OTT in Colorado is now legal to pass emissions! This is the only Tacoma tune that is legal in CO.

We are already in the process of obtaining a California Air Resources Board Executive Order (CARB-EO) and look forward to obtaining certification in all 50 states.

The 3 biggest benefits of OTT are:

- Additional low and mid range torque. Toyotas tend to feel very underpowered, and the tune puts torque and HP right back into the range where we drive the most.

- Throttle response. On the stock tune, it's like the vehicle sits and thinks for a moment after you press the gas before it goes. Even then, it takes forever to get up to speed. With OTT, the truck responds immediately and is quite peppy, but manageable.

- Reduced gear hunting and smoother shifts (or if you have a manual; smoother, tighter shift/clutch). The constant shifting on the stock tune is insane! With the extra torque of OTT, the vehicle can now utilize a wider RPM range to maintain gears.

- As a bonus, many people see slightly improved MPGs, but this is not a guarantee. There are too many variables when it comes to MPGs (fuel quality, driving style, modifications, weather, tire style/pressure, terrain, etc.). This is not an eco tune with fuel economy in mind, however the additional low end torque helps the vehicle operate better at lower RPMs. When the truck can operate at lower RPMs, it has the potential to increase fuel efficiency.

Cons:

- Honestly, almost nothing. The biggest problem is that if you pick a throttle setting that is too aggressive, it's annoying when you're in traffic because it can be kind of jumpy. It will also spin the tires too often in winter. If you find this is the case, you can get the throttle turned down for free in the future.
