ABS Kill Switch mod for 05+ Offroad EASY WAY! (PICS)

This mod only works on 2005+ trucks with the off-road package.

We should not have to do this. Toyota should have given us an ABS kill switch from the factory just like they gave us a VSC off switch.

This mod was long overdue for me as I like to offroad and ABS is a royal pain when I need to stop on loose surfaces like sand and gravel.

I read up on how to do this mod and I figured there had to be an easier way and there was.

How does it work? The mod works by tricking the 4WD ECU into thinking that the rear diff is locked when in fact it is not. The 4WD ECU sends this information to the Skid Control ECU (VSC Computer) which controls the brakes. Therefore it is the VSC Computer which turns off the VSC / and ABS system. You can't forget to turn it off because while the switch is active the VSC Off, ABS, and Locker lamp lights are lit on the dash. It's a very elegant mod.

Here are the basic steps:

1. Open driver's side door and remove lower kick panel and foot rest.
2. Find modular plug IB1 and disconnect. Unravel electrical tape.
3. Tap the 4th wire which should be Blue with Yellow Tracer. We're tapping into the wire not cutting it. DO NOT CUT IT. Okay?
4. Find Chassis ground point and install a ground wire there.
5. Connect Chassis Ground wire to switch.
6. Connect the other side of switch to T-tap
7. Test!

ORIENTATE YOURSELF

REMOVE DRIVER SIDE LOWER KICK PANEL AND LOCATE MODULAR PLUG IB1

DISCONNECT MODULAR PLUG IB1

TAP WIRE #4 BLUE / YELLOW TRACER

FIND THE GROUND POINT

INSTALL YOUR GROUND WIRE THERE

COMPLETED SWITCH HARNESS WITH GROUND WIRE. TESTED AND VALIDATED WITH MULTIMETER.

ABS KILL SWITCH INSTALLED AND WORKING!!!

I did some tests and it works perfectly. When the kill switch is active and I mash the brakes hard, the wheels lock up and the truck digs in and stops very quickly. I'm very happy with this mod.



What happens if...

In May 2015, I found an answer to a question that was asked years ago in this thread.

What happens if the ABS kill switch is active and you attempt to engage the locker?

The answerer is nothing really.

The 4WD ECU still activates an internal relay, but the diff will not mechanically engage. It does not hurt the truck.

If the vehicle operator wants to engage the diff lock, they must disable the ABS kill switch, then use the factory locker switch.

Oh and if anybody wants to debate the merits of the ABS system, that's fine! Please just do it in another thread; don't trash mine to prove a point.

Thanks OZ-T. Yoytoda (Roland) has suggested interrupting one of the wheel speed sensors with a switch. The driver side front wheel would be the closest to the dash/cab. This method would work on all trucks. I almost went that route, but I really wanted something immediately available under the dash to work with.

EDIT: Here is a guy who achieved an ABS kill switch who was not an Off-Road truck. There may be a cleaner way of doing it in the cab, just need to study some diagrams. Caribe Makaira would be a big help if had the time.

 

Excuse my ignorance, but why won't this work with the TRD Sport?

You're welcome. As far as I know, I'm the first to show that the wire lives under the dash. No need to splice in at the Skid control ECU and double back through the firewall and into the cab.

In a nutshell, the hardware is different between the Sport and Off-Road models.

Yes. You can't forget it's on because there are at least two lit lights on the dash, and three if your truck is equipped with VSC.

NOTE: VSC became standard in all trucks starting in 2009.

Just got done doing this mod and it works awesome, thanks OP.

Here's where I mounted the switch.



The switch is off center so it would fit, just took my dremel and cut out all the plastic crap behind the blank cover, but leaving the outer pieces so it would still lock into the panel.

I did this mod over the weekend...

Wow! What a difference it makes in sand and dirt! I tested it out on a dirt road and almost got whiplash from it stopping so quick. I'll have to take pictures next time.

Can't wait to see how it does in snow and ice.

If your truck has a rear locking differential it will work. To be clear you must have the Off Road model. You can usually tell if you have the off-road model if you have this sticker on the truck pictured below.

 

Thats just it. I dont have an Off Road package but I have the LSD that kicks in randomly... So I was hoping this might apply... Guess I will have to wait till i get home in a few months and look at the wires.

 

So will this work if you got a 05+ TRD off Road but with a manual tranny?

 

Yes. The transmission type isn't involved in any part of this mod.

 

How will this mod affect the abs system if your locker mod already disables ABS?
