Longer studs needed

Ok bought a new set of rims Fuel Boost
and i only get about 7turns each.im also using a tappered wheel nut to.
So i wanna get longer studs?
How long are the factory ones? i have a 2010 taco
also where can u buy them? i live in canada
any input would be app

 

Well after putting my 35" tires on I noticed something and had a bit of concern. My stock wheel studs didnt seem to be very long and upon closer inspection I see that the lugs only bit about 6-8mm of threads. I know it a general rule to have at least (minimum) bite to be equal to at least the diameter of the bolt/stud (almost 12mm).

Since I felt I was riding around on a potential time bomb - especially with the added weight of the new tires I decided it was time for new studs.

Stock:
Type: Serrated Stud
Thread: M12-1.5
Knurl Dia: 14.20mm (0.559inch)
Length: 40mm (1.575inch)
Shoulder Length: 8mm (.315inch)

New (from a 2002-2003 Toyota matrix):
Type: Serrated Stud
Thread: M12-1.5
Knurl Dia: 14.20mm (0.559inch)
Length: 55mm (2.165inch)
Shoulder Length: 26.60mm (1.05inch)

I got the new studs from Summit. Dorman PN # 610-463. They sell in bulks of 10 - so I got 30 and now have extra.

The new bite is well past the safe zone and I am happy to have upgrade. The longer shoulder on the new studs holds the rotor and drum better along with the rim when mounting.

Fairly easy job - a bit time consuming to do all 24. This can all be done without taking anything off except the front caliper/rotor and for the rear just the drum.

debating on which to get.. The first link shows the studs with threading all the way down. Plus it's not tapered... wonder if they're any good. they claim they're made in usa... but just because it's made in usa doesnt mean theyre good.

 

I would go with the Dorman ones. I can confirm they are a fit and I don't like
How the others have full threads vs the press fit shoulder like the Dorman.

2.65" - those are long. nice option though.

the dormans I converted have held up fine through any wheeling i've done with lockers and crawler and since you end up with about 6 extras - you got plenty of spares

Those are a lot cheaper than ARP's, I would have went with those if I would have known you carried them. What length are they?

listed much cheaper here. i paid roughly 54 for 30 shipped to CA

 

For those who plan on doing this mod... Do yourself a favor and get 2 huge nuts as spacers. Using your brake rotor as a spacer is bullsh*t and it doesnt even work.

Not sure why no one mentioned this in the previous how to posts.

took 4 hours to do 6 studs before i went and got the nuts. After i got the right spacers to torque the studs into place it took me around 1.5 hours to do 18.

I also measured with a caliper and the doorman studs are MUCH larger in diameter than the stock tacoma studs. .200ths i believe. impact wrench was working overtime to smash them in. god what a headache it was.

 

I would go with the ARP wheel studs, rant them for a long time, no complaints!

 

I have a 99 4x4 taco and just ran into the "too short" wheel stud issue when putting on after market wheels. will this work on a 99 too???

 

the wheel stud diameter might be different. find out what your stock specs area.
my dormans were way off spec! those mfers!

oh, I got ya, I'll look into it, just bought the truck last Friday for my Kid, the first thing he did was go by wheels and ran into the studs being too short. Of course I am out of town trying to help him out over the phone, it sure would help if I could see what he was talking about!
