Preemptive rust control?

Hey guys, I've been reading the thread about changing the front and rear diff oil, and it seems like a few people had rust issues. This got me thinking about how I could prevent as much rust as possible on the under carriage.


Anyway, has anyone taken a product like fluid film and coated the whole underside of the truck? It's lanolin based and fairly thick, so I don't think it could get into the electrical systems although I could be wrong. I figured a semi annual coating of the stuff could greatly reduce the amount of rust.

My main concern is smelling it. FF has a fairly pungent odor about it, so I'd be curious to hear if anyone has done it - and if so can you smell it in the cab?

There are a lot of threads/posts about guy up north using fluid film. The guys using it seem to swear by it. Sounds like they put it on just before winter, and add as needed throughout.

 

undercoating is important, also spraying whatever oil you can into the doors, that was the first thing to rot other than panels on my 1992.

Every year I hit rust with rust converter, then blast it with fluid film.

This year I am going to mix fluid film with bar oil, mineral oil, and parafin wax because i dont feel like spending another $50 on a gallon when i have 1/2 leftover

 

Also, I have never noticed the smell after applying FF nor have a received any comments about a smell

I'm not trying to be a negative but this stuff has all been covered before. The resources are here you just need to search for them.

But to add to this thread, a month after I got my 2013 I noticed some surface rust sitting on the rear diff, actually the axle housing portion, so I sanded it down and shot it with some black enamel paint. I have had my truck, working on a whole year now, and being in Georgia, rust has not really been any of an issue. My dads 2004 hasn't accumulated hardly any rust since being here...and we brought it over from driving it around in Hawaii for 3 years or so.

 

I've searched and read before posting most of my threads. I find a lot of good info, but most of the time I have a certain question that hasn't been answered in the previous threads.
