Does my friend's 2.7 4x4 have a 2.4 in it?

My friend bought a 2001 4 Cyl., 4x4, that is supposed to have the 2.7 3RZ-FE.

It also doesn't say whether the truck being worked on is a 2.4 or 2.7, but I'm guessing a 2.4.

My friend's truck has the engine from the second link. Yet, it is a 4x4 and is supposed to have the 2.7.

We are wondering if one of the prior owners put a 2.4 in it, if those links are mismarked, or if there are different versions of each?

Which has ignition coils and which has a distributor?

AFAIK, both engines (for the same year) are practically identical, except for the stroke.

Both have a distributor for the 95-97 years.
Both have coil packs for 98-00.
Both have COP for 01-04.

Not absolutely certain about 01-04, but pretty sure.

To further confuse us, today I called the local service department to order parts and when I told the guy on the phone, the year, make, and engine size, he gave me part numbers for a plug wire set. That's what got us thinking that something wasn't right.

Then, the write up with the pics of the 3RZ-FE with a wire set, that must be from an early year 3RZ-FE.

I drive a 3.4 and am not too familiar with these 4 cylinders.

So, it's a COP? Then, besides the plugs, is there anything else to replace in a basic tune-up? It doesn't seem to be misfiring or throwing any codes, so I think the coils are okay. (Dealerhip price is $70 a pop). The wire harnesses that attach to the coils are wrapped tightly in a conduit that doesn't seem to disconnect easily.

Based on what rick said in his reply, I'm pretty sure it's a 2.7. There aren't any obvious signs of a swap. We were just confused by the service department and the early year write-ups.

 

I just confirmed with an electronic version of the Toyota service manualsthat 2001 4x4 standard cabs have only a 2.7 whereas extended anddouble cabs have either the 2.7 or 3.4. The 2.7's for 2001 are all coil on plug(COP).

2WD trucks with a 4cyl are all 2.4's with COP.

The parts guy probably screwed up (being lazy) and ended up with wires dueto not putting the proper year in the system.
