hi, i was talking to a crutchfield rep about upgrading the rear speakers in my 2014 access cab. he said that "the rear door speaker location has been eliminated. The new rear speaker location is above the headliner. The factory speakers cannot be replaced with any aftermarket speakers"

does anyone have an opinion on this? thanks.

So I have a 2014 Access Cab and I had holes. I used the covers that were on the holes to get a template for the MDF mounts I made for the speakers. I cut a hole in the plastic door shell put the speaker grille on top of the hole and then put speaker fabric behind that. I had to run cables (none were there) and I cut the headliner speakers (they sounded like garbage).

I got some pics and in the next few days plan to do a write up and it did not all go to plan and I had to reference several different posts to get it all to work. Grounding became an issue but I just made my own through the floor and used a rubber washer for the outside so water wont get in.

My Deck now feeds an Audio Control LC7I, which then feeds a JL Audio 400/4 4 channel amp, which then feeds JL 6.75 inch components in the access doors and 6X9 infinity kappa's in the front. I still have some tuning to do but it sounds much better with sound behind me now and not just an open cave.

Wow... I have the 2014 Access cab too. I adjusted to center when I got the truck and forgot about it til this week. I like the sound OK for a stock system, up front, but when I fade to the rear... I couldn't figure out the speaker thing either... I was driving so i couldn't do a real search to find them but wow... what a sad little sound. What's the point in the headliner mounted speakers? That's gonna have to get changed for sure. Having been a Car Stereo Installer/repair guy for 20 years, it shouldn't be an issue. I was just highly disappointed in that "headphone residual audio" quality. What were they thinking?

I believe, since I have an access cab, the rear seats will be coming out anyway. They're nothing but space wasters for an older guy (No kids or animals to haul). I'll have to build something that makes sense and has decent sound and maybe offers a small storage place as well. Sheet metal fabrication being a hobby of mine, I should be able to come up with something viable. I'll be watching the world around me for other options, but I don't want to use up all that space (OK... what little space is there) doing audio either. Even having done audio for that long, I've never been into using up an entire car for nothing but tunes. For others... OK. But My cars have always been to drive and travel, not to show off my skills and audio audacity.

I agree with you and have outfitted my last 6 new cars with subs and speakers, but this time I did not do subs. I threw an Audio Control LC7i to clean the source (fed directly from the deck), which sends a cleaned up signal to a JL Audio XD 400/4 which then feeds (through new 14 gauge speaker wire) a set of JL Audio C2-650 components in the back and Infinity Kappa 693.9l in the front. The system has good enough bass that I am not going to spend lots of time fabricating in the back to get subs in there. I mounted the amp and Audio control on a piece of 1/2 inch MDF I cut to fit under the front driver seat (there was less clearance under passenger so it did not fit there) with some black pleather fabric on top.

Some people who are adding subs are building it where the center console is for the back and have it downward fire to the floor between the front center console and the rear center console. I debated that but I don't have enough room for any more amps and really don't really need any more bass (although I will admit sometimes I do miss some 10's or 12's).

Hey guys, I just got a 2013 Access Cab and I was looking to change out my speakers (full audio system actually) and just found out the rear speakers were in the head liner (then I found this forum and thread looking for more info on it). Anyway does anyone know what the size the speaker is? Just debating on whether or not it's worth changing out or if I should just build boxes to mount to a sub box.

So the speaker in the headliner is worthless and probably impossible to replace with anything that sounds good. If you look at the post right above your first you will see what I went with. The rear doors do have holes for speakers even though they do not use them, you just have to cut the shell which is pretty easy if you have a dremel tool.

I have an 09 acess cab. I left the headliner speakers in, but tapped into the rear wires behind the radio and then ran new wiring under the door sills up and around....into the rear doors through the factory wire loom. I bought 6" speaker adapters on Ebay for $20. They look just like the one$ from *********. I then installed inexpensive speakers and cut the panels for the grilles. The headliner speakers now are too quiet to hear and the rears sound very good. Part of an afternoon spent and well worth the time!:)

An old Post, but I am facing a similar issue on my 2012 Access Cab : the right "Rear" speaker had no sound. May add a pair of real speakers to the reqr doors and disconnect the toy speakers in the headliner.

Rebooting this thread just to chime in and to breathe a sigh of relief as I am not alone. I have a 2017 crew cab with the JBL package, and the rear speakers are basically non-existent. It's quite horrible. Yes, the sub-woofer is behind the rear seat, but it seems like it's shut off despite the F/R fader set to 100% rear. Pretty stupid. Usually, in a real audio setup, the sub-woofer has its own channel or gets its signal from the rear speakers (with a crossover).

The old tried-and-true method to balancing the staging in a vehicle is to turn the fader to 100% rear, then slowly bring it forward until you cannot discern the rear speakers anymore. At that point, you're balanced.

Since the sub-woofer seems to turn off and/or is tied to the front channels, and the rear speakers are minimally supplied, there really is NO EFFECTIVE WAY TO re-balance the system using the F/R fader.

I taped into the rear roof speaker wires at the drivers side a pillar in my 2012 access cab.
I ran new wires to speaker boxes in the rear but I'm still getting hardly any sound out of the speakers.
It's the stock non JBL HU with no sub.
What did i do wrong ?
