Would the atlas/gazetter show the logging roads?

Can't go wrong with that atlas. As long as it is less than five years old it will be as accurate as Noelie says. Everything is on there. Sandy pond is maybe ten minutes from my house. If I was going to be around I would take some time to show you a few places.

I'm not sure exactly what the logging roads are like up in the North Maine Woods or how far north you are thinking about going, but this thread might help you out: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/north-east/58297-maine-45.html#post9987936

I saw this thread a few months ago and am planning on heading up that way for a long weekend of camping with some friends this summer. Maybe something you can check out while you're in Maine.

That's WAY North. From the Anson area to Chamberlain lake it's about a 4 hour trip one way. The trains are definitely worth a visit, but they'd be better saved for a different vacation when you could spend the whole time exploring up that way.

Ok, I can't find a good way to make a map for you at the moment. But the ones that come to mind would be the Gold Brook road, which goes from Chain of Ponds above Eustis all the way over to Parlin Pond, above the forks. It can be done as a 40-some odd mile dirt road straight shot through, or you can spend DAYS exploring the offshoots. This is about as far north as you would probably want to go as a day trip.

The next that I usually go on is the Lincoln Pond road, which goes from Aziscohos Lake to Eustis, near Flagstaff lake. Same idea, shorter but lots of side roads. Both roads cross/pass miles of water. I do most of my fall fishing in this area. Also some good wilderness camping spots you can book on this road.

Bemis Road is a good short dirt road, but the views you miss using it instead of the main road isn't always worth it. If you get a chance drive up quill hill just above Rangeley. I'm right in Farmington and depending on my work schedule I might be able to play tour guide a little.

The things to keep in mind: Every body of water has different rules for fishing. Lots of artificial lure/fly fishing only in this part of the state. Get your law book and know where you are fishing. Whereever you get your license should have the law book available for free.

Now the 2 big things: These are active logging areas. The trucks have the right of way. They are coming through loaded and fast, and they aren't stopping. Best bet is having a CB radio tuned to their channel, for the most part they do a good job of letting you know where they are. Return the favor and stay out of the way and you will have a good day.

The other thing is that these are big woods. Roads can be poorly marked. Little/no cell signal. I've had the best luck with a Maine Atlas and a mapping GPS. Typically the combination gets you back on track. Make sure people know where you are and when you are returning, and try not to travel alone.

Great job muddy! I have a camp in Sangerville and am just learning some of the logging roads. Imcan't wait to get my fly rod out this year and go after some brookies.

    ugh...

Can anyone recommend a good, honest and reasonably priced mechanic in the Bowdoin/Sagadahoc County area? (If that exists...)

    Thanks all!

Is your 4Runner used everyday and run for a good half hour or so?

I use Lee's Tire in Topsham quite a bit. Not the cheapest, but the are reasonable and a pretty straight shooter. Worth a call to explain your problem and see if they can help you. Ask for Peter if you call.

It is. At the very least, it is run 20 minutes to work, 20 minutes home 4 out of 7 days a week. Commute is mostly highway.
