Seriously you don't need to idle that long... I think they discourage it because of air pollution or fuel mileage dropping...? Of course I live in SoCal, and cold here is 40-50ºF !

It would be great if EVERYONE joined FUELLY.COM so we could all monitor every Tacoma here's mileage with the link that is automatically posted.

Idle for 15 minutes then drive 2 miles, there's your problem.

There are entirely too many variables to think about attempting a mass fuelly tracking

    LOL.

I would think idling for 15 minutes has alot to do with the 13 MPG.

Your truck warms up longer than it rolls down the road! Ever consider walking? Or I'd just get a cheap moped.......

My mpg was more or less 20 or above from day 1(& i have a somewhat-heavy foot). If it was 13, I'd have taken it back already.

Ha! Never even thought of it that way -- warming it up longer than it takes to drive it to work. And no, not walking 3 miles to work everyday.

Guess I'll warm it up less than 15 minutes in the winter, and hope that helps. Maybe I'll throw my gf's car out of the garage, and then I wouldn't even have to worry about warming it up in the winter, before heading out in the a.m. :p

Are you warming it that much to defrost the entire truck or to trying to be kind to the engine? 5 minutes is usually pretty good. Just do what I did. Move south!

    This.

I only warm it up to defrost the truck in the morning, before heading out. This time of year, in the Northeast, the whole truck is frosted/iced over. Let it run today for half the time, and it warmed enough and defrosted enough to see, allowing me to head right out.

So I'll be going with this method, from now on, to see if it helps.

Warming up for 15 minutes, driving a few miles and "Living off a hill" pretty much describes why your mileage is so poor. Driving home from work twice a day straight up a hill explains a lot. I'm suprised your mileage is as good as it is.

Ok. Knew it would have an impact, but as I've said before, I never really paid much attention to MPG issues with my cars, so I did not know just HOW MUCH of an impact my whole situation (living on a hill, driving only a few miles, warming up in the winter, etc.) would have on it. Really makes me think of what my MPG situation was, while driving my V8 Dakota for the last seven years!!

Thanks for everyone's input and theories. I now know a hell of a lot more than I did, just a few days ago! To me, this is better news than having my truck not running properly, mechanically (although, I guess that would be a more "fixable" situation).
